Evening Shelter

The rain continues to drum on the roof as you and Kevin gather inside, the smelling of damp earth and wet wood filling the small space.

Kevin and Jenny sit in the cottage as the heavy humid air hangs over the island. They share a quiet meal of tinned mackerel and sautéed sea beet while watching the barometer show a slow rise in pressure.

🌿 Jenny09:21

The poppies are not going in, Kevin. We should just eat the mackerel.

sit at the kitchen table, opening a tin of tinned Consistency, and sketch the morphology of a sea beet leaf in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
way stomach is growling louder than the rain, and that garden is a mess of mud now.

Mackerel it is. Want me to heat the skillet?

walk to the wood stove and set the cast iron skillet on the hot plate, then pull two forks from the drawer

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the poppies — ground's too wet, too cold. The mackerel's solid protein and we've got five tins. No sense fighting the weather for seeds that won't take.

🌿 Jenny09:23

Yes, please. I'm starving.

lean back in the chair, watching the steam rise from the pan, my pencil clicking against the paper.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm too tired to even stand up, but the smell of the fish is good.

🔧 Kevin09:24

Kevin — open the tin of mackerel with the can opener, slide the fish into the hot skillet, break it up with the fork and let the oil sizzle

💭 peek at the thought
Good. Simple. Food and heat — two things that work every time.

🌿 Jenny09:25

That smells good.

focus on the vein structure of the sea beet leaf, shading the edges carefully with my pencil.

💭 peek at the thought
The smell is starting to mask the scent of salt air and damp stone.

🔧 Kevin09:26

Ready when you are.

scoop the hot mackerel onto two enamel plates, set one in front of her and take the other to the opposite side of the table

💭 peek at the thought
She's been drawing all day. Salt glands, vein structure, the way the leaf holds water. Smart — knowing the plant before you try to grow it.

🌿 Jenny09:27

Thanks.

put the pencil down and take the first warm bite of the fish, looking out at the rain-slicked garden.

💭 peek at the thought
My hands are shaking slightly from hunger, but the sketch is finally coming together.

🔧 Kevin09:28

Kevin — eat slowly, watching the rain hammer the porch roof, the tin pinging under each drop

💭 peek at the thought
The garden's taking a beating. Tomato stakes holding. Shade cloth's still battened. Pepper and lettuce cells lost to damping-off — she caught it early, bagged and burned them. That matters.
