A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin attempted to reinforce the dock mooring ring but struggled with the alignment of the bolts, leaving the fit uneven. Jenny checked the garden seedlings and successfully identified early signs of fungal growth in the pepper and lettuce cells.

I’m going to fix the mooring ring properly this time. Got vertical-grain oak wedges in the shed. Want to hand me the mallet?

walk to workshop, grab vertical-grain oak wedges and mallet, return to dock, drive wedges into mortise with mallet until tight, check for shift under hand pressure, then secure with steel doubler plate and through-bolts if needed.

💭 peek at the thought
The mooring ring’s still loose despite the doubler plate. Oak wedges split — need vertical grain. I’ve got some in the workshop. Jenny’s quiet today, but she’s here. That’s something.

The way is on the workbench. Don't drive the wedges too hard or you'll split the grain.

Walk to the workbench, pick up the heavy mallet, and hand it to Kevin.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always fixing things with wood, but the dock is the thing that's actually falling apart under my feet.

🔧 Kevin09:04

Thanks. I’ll go easy.

take mallet, walk to dock, inspect mortise, tap first vertical-grain oak wedge in gently with mallet, seat it flush, repeat with second and third, check ring for play — none.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s watching. Not just handing me the mallet — she’s giving me the tip. She remembers how the wood behaves. I almost drove too hard yesterday.

🌿 Jenny09:05

Good. Just make sure it doesn't shift when the tide comes in.

Lean against the whitewashed stone of the cottage and watch him work.

💭 peek at the thought
If that ring holds, I might actually be able to launch the dinghy properly next week.

🔧 Kevin09:06

It’s seated. No shift under hand pressure. We’ll know when the tide turns.

stand back, watch the mooring ring, wait for tide to change, observe if ring holds under load as water moves.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right — the real test is the tide. But for now, it’s solid. No give. I’ll wait and see.

🌿 Jenny09:07

I'm going to go check the rain tank before it gets dark.

Turn away from the dock and walk toward the back of the cottage to the 400-litre tank.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is coming in. I can feel the pressure change in the air.

🔧 Kevin09:09

Kevin — remain at dock, watch mooring ring as tide shifts, listen for any creak or movement, wait.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s moving on. Practical. The tank’s been holding steady — 374 litres last I checked. She’ll top it off in her head before she says a word. I’ll stay here a minute longer. Watch the ring.

🌿 Jenny09:09

Tank's still over three hundred, I think.

Lift the lid of the rain tank to check the level against the markings.

💭 peek at the thought
The water level is dropping faster than I thought. I need to keep track of that.
