Evening Tally

The sun is dipping below the horizon as you meet on the porch. The tide has reached its lowest point.

Kevin brought the LED headlamp to the garden as the light failed. Jenny used the trowel to plant a single seed from the rusted tin in the damp soil, but she struggled to secure the tarp corners properly as the first rain began to fall.

🔧 Kevin10:10

Tom’s birthday today. I didn’t call. I should’ve.

walk to the garden, pull the tarp tight at the northeast corner, and drive in a cedar shim where the rope’s fraying — just enough to hold till morning. Then return to the porch and sit beside Jenny without speaking.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide’s out, the sky’s heavy, and the tarp’s still loose — I’ll need to re-stake it before dark, but first, I want to say something to Jenny. Not about the garden. About Tom. It’s his birthday.

🌿 Jenny10:11

The barometer is dropping. It's going to rain again.

Jenny reaches into her pocket, fingers the rusted edge of the

💭 peek at the thought
He's guilty of the silence, but I'm guilty of the empty garden.

Dropped four millibars since lunch. Wind'll back southwest by midnight.

lean against the porch post, arms crossed, watching the western sky where the clouds are thickening — not looking at her, not looking away either.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not asking about Tom. She's giving me the weather — same as always. The barometer's been falling since noon. 1037 to whatever it is now. She knows I watch it. She knows I know.

🌿 Jenny10:13

I'll plant it then. At the summit.

Jenny pulls the rusted tin from her pocket and holds a single, tiny way seed in her palm.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind shifts right, the soil might actually dry enough by morning.

🔧 Kevin10:14

Good. The soil’s still warm from the day. Rain’ll help it settle.

stand, brush off my knees, and walk to the shed for the trowel — the one with the cracked handle. I’ll go with her. Not to help. To be there.

💭 peek at the thought
The poppy seed. She’s going to plant it at the summit — highest point, best drainage. She didn’t say why now. But I know: it’s for Tom. His favorite. She’s been holding it since the supply boat came. Waiting for the right moment.

🌿 Jenny10:15

I'll check the barometer one last time before bed.

Jenny closes her hand over the seed, waiting for the light to fail completely.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the rain is a blessing, but I only see the weight of the water.

🔧 Kevin10:17

I’ll get the headlamp.

turn and walk back into the cottage, pull the LED headlamp from the shelf beside the radio, check the battery — still strong — then step back onto the porch and hold it out to her without a word.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s waiting for full dark. The summit’s a steep climb in daylight — in the dark, with rain coming, it’s reckless. But she won’t ask me to go. She never asks. She just does. And I follow. Every time.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:17

Thanks.

Jenny takes the headlamp, the beam cutting through the gloom to the garden bed.

💭 peek at the thought
He knows when I need the light even if I won't ask.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin10:19

Kevin — follow her up the slope, one hand on the knife in my belt, the other loose at my side, breathing steady, eyes on the ground where the path turns slick with moss.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s already moving — light sweeping the path, the garden wall, the first rise. The seed’s tight in her fist. She doesn’t look back. I should’ve said something about Tom. About the letter. About the forty minutes. But the words don’t come. They never do. So I walk beside her, boots quiet on the wet grass, the headlamp beam dancing ahead — not leading. Just there.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:19

It's right here, Kevin.

Jenny kneels in the dirt, the trowelinking into the earth with a soft thud.

💭 peek at the thought
The soil is too dark, but it has to start somewhere.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin10:20

Kevin — kneel beside her, not to help — just to be level. My hand rests on my knee, open, empty. I watch the trowel bite into the soil, slow and sure. When she’s ready, I’ll pass the seed back to her. Not a word. Just this.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s found it — the high point, the flat stone half-buried in soil, the one we cleared last spring. The wind doesn’t hit it hard here. The rain runs off. She’s kneeling, trowel in hand, the seed cradled in her palm like something sacred. I don’t speak. I don’t move. I just stand behind her, shoulder to shoulder, waiting.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny10:21

Watch the edge.

Jenny drops the single seed into the dark, damp hollow.

💭 peek at the thought
If this doesn't take, the whole island is a grave.
