Night of Humidity

The two of you meet in the kitchen as the lantern flickers, the sound of the rat in the pantry the only noise in the still air.

The heavy air hangs still over the cottage as the pressure continues its slow decline. Kevin inspects the pantry for signs of the rat while the lantern flickers, and Jenny checks the seedling trays for further fungal spread in the damp heat.

The rat is in the pantry again, and the seeds are getting too damp.

wipe the sweat from my forehead with my forearm and gesture toward the kitchen table.

💭 peek at the thought
The humidity is eating the way alive; if I don't move them tomorrow, I'll lose the whole batch.

Trap didn't finish the job. I'll run the line again tonight. Seeds need a drier home — got an idea.

walk to the pantry, crouch, shine headlamp along the baseboard to find fresh droppings and the rat's run

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about both. The tin's rusted through at the seam — seen it when I moved it for the tarp. And that rat's been bold since the snap trap only got the female. Need to check the trap line, then move the seeds somewhere the damp can't reach. Maybe the spare insulator box — it's sealed, dry, and up on the shelf.

🌿 Jenny11:27

Move them to the stone(${ by the stove; it stays cooler and further from the floor rot.

pick up the seed tin and the seedling trays, checking the weight for more dampness.

💭 peek at the thought
If he gets into the tin, it's over. I can't lose Grandma's seeds to pests.

Good call. Stone'll wick the moisture. Let's get them up.

take the seed tin and trays from Jenny, carry them to the stone hearth beside the stove, set them down flat and level, then turn back toward the pantry with the headlamp on

💭 peek at the thought
Stone by the stove — yes, the thermal mass keeps it dry even when the air's thick. She's thinking ahead. I'll help her move them, then check the trap while I'm down there.

🌿 Jenny11:29

Look for gaps behind the way sacks. They'll chew through the cardboard easily.

follow him into the pantry, kneeling on the floor to inspect the base of the saltboards.

💭 peek at the thought
The stone is cold, but the air is still so heavy. I need to see exactly where he's getting in.

🔧 Kevin11:30

Saw the flour sack. They're in the wall cavity. Vent hole behind the shelf, or the floor joint.

pull the bottom shelf out, shine the light up into the dark behind it, run fingers along the wall-floor seam feeling for draft or gnaw marks

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — flour sack's already chewed, cardboard's no barrier. Need to find where they're coming in. Probably the old vent hole behind the shelves or the gap where the wall meets the floor joist. Steel wool and epoxy putty'll stop it, if I can reach.
