← Day 329

the keeper's cottage · day 329 · evening

Evening approach of the storm

The air grows death still as the temperature drops, and the first heavy drops of rain hit the hot garden wall.

The heavy air finally breaks as a sudden, violent downpour hammers against the island, turning the dust to slick mud instantly. Kevin and Jenny huddle in the garden, frantically trying to plant the heirloom seeds while the wind picks up, lashing the thatch on the cottage roof.

🌿 Jenny12:13

Kevin, get the tarps inside! It's starting now!

Grab the seed tin and the notebook, then run to the garden bed.

💭 peek at the thought
The storm is coming too fast; if I don't plant now, the seeds will rot in the tin anyway.

🔧 Kevin12:13

Dinghy first. Meet you at the cottage.

sprint to the dock, check dinghy mooring lines and double up the stern spring with the heavy weather line, then run back to the cottage porch

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here. Barometer's been dropping all day. Need to secure the dinghy first — if it breaks loose we lose the engine, the radio, the only way off. Then the cottage. Jenny's got the seeds and notes.

🌿 Jenny12:15

The boat isn't going anywhere, help with the seeds!

Drop the first heirloom seed into the damp earth and press it down with a thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always worried about the boat while the world is literally falling in the dirt.

🔧 Kevin12:15

Fine. Give me the tin.

run back to the garden, crouch beside Jenny in the mud, take the seed tin and start planting heirloom seeds alongside her, pressing each into the wet soil as the rain hammers down

💭 peek at the thought
She's planting in the middle of a storm. The ground's already soaked. Seeds'll rot or wash out. But she's not listening to reason right now. The dinghy's tied — double stern spring, heavy weather line, bow line solid. It'll hold. She needs hands, not arguments.

🌿 Jenny12:17

Don't press them too hard, you'll crush the embryos.

Take a handful of seeds from the tin and find a clear spot next to the poppy.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's finally helping, even if the soil is turning to soup.

🔧 Kevin12:17

Wouldn't dream of it.

loosen my grip, let the seeds fall from my fingertips into the damp earth one by one, lighter than I've ever done anything, watching her hands move fast and sure in the downpour

💭 peek at the thought
Embryos. Right. Delicate things. My hands are for crankshafts and prop shafts, not this. But she's calm. Focused. The rain's cold now, soaking through my shirt. The poppy she planted yesterday — she's putting the rest around it. Like a circle. Like she's marking something.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:19

Quick, we only have minutes before the wind picks up.

Press the last seed into the mud and cover it with a thin layer of silt.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually listening for once, but the rain is going to ruin everything.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin12:19

Done. Cottage. Now.

grab the empty seed tin, shove it inside my jacket, haul Jenny up by the arm, and sprint for the cottage porch with her ahead of me

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's already howling in the trees. She thinks minutes. I think seconds. The garden wall's only two courses high on the seaward side — won't stop a surge. The cottage porch faces south. If the wind backs southwest like the barometer says, the rain drives horizontal. We're kneeling in the open. She's finished. I'm not moving fast enough.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:21

Close the door, Kevin!

Slam the heavy wood door shut and bolt it as the wind howls.

💭 peek at the thought
The seeds are in the ground, but the sky is trying to swallow them.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin12:21

Stove. Wood box. You dry off. I'll get heat going.

drop the seed tin on the kitchen table, grab the axe from the corner, split kindling fast, and light the wood stove with newspaper and dry spruce offcuts

💭 peek at the thought
Inside. Door bolted. The cottage shakes with a gust. Rain hammers the roof like gravel. Through the south window the garden's a grey blur — the wall might hold, might not. The seeds are in. The poppy's in. She's breathing hard, wet hair stuck to her face, alive in a way I haven't seen in months. The radio's silent on the shelf. The stove's cold. We're dry. For now.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:23

The tin's on the table... it's a mess.

Sit on the kitchen stool, rub my muddy hands together, and watch the fire catch.

💭 peek at the thought
My hands are shaking from the cold and the adrenaline, but the seeds are finally down.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin12:23

Coffee. You need warmth inside.

fill the dented kettle from the rain tank tap, set it on the stove top, pull two enamel mugs from the shelf, and spoon coffee into the chipped French press while the water heats

💭 peek at the thought
She's shaking. Cold or adrenaline or both. The tin — the rusted one marked 'E' — sits on the table where I dropped it, lid askew, damp seeds spilling onto the scrubbed pine. Heirloom tomato. Basil. Pepper. The poppy seed's gone, planted. She's watching the flame take, not looking at me. The wind screams past the eaves. The cottage is solid stone. We've weathered worse. But the barometer's still falling.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:25

It's just seeds. The garden was waiting anyway.

Trace the mud on my fingernails with a thumb and look at the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being helpful, but I'm still thinking about the soil pH.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin12:25

Yeah. It was.

pour the boiling water into the French press, let it steep, then press slow and steady, the smell of dark roast cutting through the wet wool and wood smoke as I hand her the first mug

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The garden's been waiting. For years. For me to build the sensory paths, the raised beds with the fragrant herbs, the bench where we could sit and not talk. I never started. Just talked. And now, in a storm, with minutes to spare, we planted. Not the garden I dreamed. But something. Her thumb on my nail — dirt under it from pressing seeds — it's the closest we've been in a long time. The kettle's singing. Steam's up.
