A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin and Jenny prepared the garden bed for planting heirloom seeds. Kevin worked to loosen the soil with a garden fork while Jenny cleared the surrounding weeds, but the ground remained stubbornly packed and difficult to work for a proper planting.

Morning.

Walk to the stove, pour coffee into the enamel mug, and step out onto the porch to scan the horizon and check the barometer properly.

💭 peek at the thought
The porch boards are warm under my boots. Coffee smells from the stove. Jenny's sketchbook is still open on the bunk — sea beet salt glands, three iterations. I should close it before the breeze takes the pages. The barometer on the shelf reads 1030 and falling. Wind's light onshore now, but the pressure drop means weather's coming. Maybe tonight, maybe tomorrow. The dinghy's tied at the dock with the Yanmar mounted and tested. Transom knee epoxy cured overnight. Copper wash and rope wait on the mainland, two days' sail if the wind holds southwest. Supply boat's due in five days. I need to decide: row now while the window's open, or stay and button down.

Morning. The pressure is dropping fast.

Pick up the mug, take a slow sip of bitter coffee, and traces the rust on the seed tin with my thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
He's already checking the sky while I'm thinking about the dirt. My stomach is growling again.

Three millibars since dawn. Wind's still light but it'll back northwest by afternoon if this keeps up.

Set the mug on the porch rail, pick up the shortwave mic, and flip to the coast guard weather frequency.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the barometer too. Three millibars in an hour, maybe four. That's not a gentle change. The wind's still light onshore — southwest, barely a ripple on the water — but the pressure doesn't lie. Front's building somewhere west. Could be twelve hours, could be six. The dinghy's ready. Transom knee held. Yanmar ran clean under load yesterday. If I leave at first light tomorrow, I'll have the tide with me crossing the channel. But if the front accelerates... I've seen southwesters turn to northwest gales in four hours out here. No mainland forecast to check. Just the radio, and the last weatherfax was two days old.

🌿 Jenny11:49

way I'd better get it in the ground before the rain starts.

Look down at the half-weeded garden bed, then back at the seed tin in my hand.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind shifts, the garden soil will be too cold before the seed even takes root.

🔧 Kevin11:50

Hand me the trowel. I'll clear the weeds while you sow.

Take the rusted seed tin from Jenny, set it on the porch table, and go to the shed for the hand trowel — the one with the worn ash handle, not the broken one.

💭 peek at the thought
She's holding the seed tin like it's something fragile. Poppy seed. She planted one at the high point last night — I saw the fresh soil disturbed near the shrine stones. The rest are damp but viable. If she gets them in now, before the rain, they might take. The garden wall's two courses high on the seaward side, but the back bed's still half weeds. We talked about the sensory garden for months. Never built it. Just talked. She's trying to make something grow here, even if it's just poppies in cracked earth. I should help. Not just stand here with the radio.

🌿 Jenny11:51

Don't dig too deep, you'll bruise the roots.

Walk to the garden bed, kneel in the dirt, and hold the single heirloom seed in my palm.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's just a task, but the soil is stubborn and I'm way tired.

🔧 Kevin11:52

Got it. Shallow scrape, just to clear the competition.

Kneel beside Jenny in the garden bed, use the trowel to lift the surface weeds in a small circle around her hand, and lay them aside on the dry grass.

💭 peek at the thought
She's kneeling in the garden bed, one heirloom seed cradled in her palm like it's the last one. Not poppy — this is from the grandmother's tin. The one she's been saving. Damp but viable. She won't waste it. If she plants it now, before the rain, it has a chance. The soil's loose from last night's weeding, but it's still got the coarse sand from the old wall rebuild. I'll clear the weeds shallow — just enough to give the seed a clean patch. No deep digging. She's right. The roots need room to spread, not to be chopped.

🌿 Jenny11:53

way, the soil is still too packed over here.

Trace the edge of the cleared patch with a finger, looking at the tiny seed in my palm.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so casual with it, like the earth isn't holding my grandmother's whole history.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin11:55

I'll loosen it. Fork, not spade.

Stand, walk to the shed, retrieve the hand-carved spruce garden fork, return to the bed, and gently work the tines into the cleared patch — rocking, not turning — to break the surface crust to four inches.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The soil under the weeds is still compacted from months of neglect — hardpan under the surface layer. Poppy needs loose earth to taproot deep before the dry comes. If the root hits that pan, it'll stall. The rain'll help settle it after planting, but the seed needs a fighting chance now. I should fork it over gently, just the top few inches, don't turn the subsoil. The garden fork I carved from spruce offcut — uneven tines but it'll do the job without tearing the soil structure.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:55

Okay. It's ready.

Press a small indentation into the center of the patch with my thumb and drop the first heirloom seed into the dark.

💭 peek at the thought
It's finally soft enough, but my hands are still shaking too much to focus.
