Afternoon meeting

The sun begins its slow descent as the shadows lengthen across the garden. You meet at the cottage to discuss the upcoming supply boat arrival in three days.

Kevin tested the spruce spar epoxy patch and found it still tacky, so he rigged a temporary foreguy to the mooring bitt to relieve the mast step. He inspected the radio mast's new porcelain insulator and self-amalgamating tape seal, confirming comms are functional. Jenny laid out the sea beet morphology sketches to de-salt them and checked the rain tank base, finding no leaks.

The boat is coming in three days. I need to check the radio one last time before.

Wipe a smudge of graphite off my thumb and look at the half-weeded garden.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is growling again, but I can't stop thinking about those seeds in the tin; they're waiting at me every day.

🔧 Kevin14:09

Aye. I’ll meet you at the shelf in five. Just want to press my thumb into the spar where the split runs — see if it’s set.

walk to the porch, crouch, and press my thumb firmly into the epoxy patch on the spruce spar, watching for any give or tackiness.

💭 peek at the thought
I’ll check the radio with her, but first I need to see if the spar’s cured enough to take the generator’s weight. If it’s still tacky, we’re flying blind on power till the boat comes.

🌿 Jenny14:11

Take your time. I'm going inside to de-salt the morphology sketches.

Pick up the stack of sea beet drawings and walk into the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
If it's still soft, the whole thing will fail under the next swell, and I'm too tired for another repair.

🔧 Kevin14:11

(shouting through the open door) Jenny — spar’s not set. Still tacky under pressure. We can’t hang the generator yet.

walk to the dock, grab a length of the new half-inch three-strand rope, and tie a temporary foreguy from the spar’s tip to the mooring bitt, taking tension off the mast step.

💭 peek at the thought
The epoxy’s still soft — thumb sank in a millimetre and came away sticky. We can’t load the generator yet. I’ll tell Jenny, then rig a temporary stay to take some weight off the spar till the boat.

🌿 Jenny14:13

I know. I'll check the water tank while you finish that.

Lay the sketches on the kitchen table and walk toward the back of the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
It's always the epoxy, the humidity, the salt—nothingization wants to stay dry here.

🔧 Kevin14:15

(quiet, to myself) Right then. Foreguy, aerial, radio check. Three days.

finish the clove hitch on the mooring bitt, pull the foreguy taut, and cleat it off; then walk back to the cottage, climb the short ladder to the radio mast bracket, and inspect the porcelain insulator and self-amalgamating tape seal.

💭 peek at the thought
She already knew. Must have checked it herself this morning while I was at the chafe guard. Good — means she’s not waiting on me for everything. I’ll finish the foreguy, then check the radio aerial insulator I replaced. If that’s holding, we’ve got comms for the boat.

🌿 Jenny14:16

Is the radio mast holding okay?

Walk to the back wall and inspect the base of the 400-litre rain tank for any dampness or weeping.

💭 peek at the thought
If the spar doesn't hold, I can't even get the generator mounted next week.

🔧 Kevin14:17

Aye. New porcelain’s bedded, tape’s holding. No cracks, no tracking. Comms are good.

climb down the ladder, walk to the kitchen shelf, and power on the shortwave radio; let it warm up while I scan Channel 16 for any traffic.

💭 peek at the thought
Insulator’s clean, tape intact, no salt tracking. Mast’s solid. She’s asking because the last one shattered under storm load — fair question. I’ll give her the straight answer.
