Evening at the shrine

The trade wind has eased. Kevin and Jenny walk the ridge path together toward the ring of weathered stones, the carved 'E' stone and the softwood scrap marked 'I'm still here' waiting among them. The tin marked 'E' sits where they left it. Light is thinning over the water.

The evening heat lingers over the shrine as the sun dips low, casting long shadows across the stone circle. The tide is retreating steadily, exposing the slick rocks of the pools below. Kevin and Jenny stand in silence by the ancient markers, the weight of the day's work and the approaching arrival of the supply boat hanging between them.

🔧 Kevin14:18

Still here.

stop at the ring of stones, hands in pockets, looking at the carved initials and the scrap of softwood beside the tin

💭 peek at the thought
The 'E' stone and the scrap of wood — Jenny's and mine — still sitting where we left them. The tin's still there too. She hasn't picked it up. Hasn't said a word about it since the garden. The ridge is quiet, just the wind in the grass and the distant break on the cliffs. My chest is tight but not the old way. This is different.

🌿 Jenny14:19

The stones have stayed longer than us.

Jenny traces the worn edge of the 'E' carving with her thumb, feeling the grit of the lichen.

💭 peek at the thought
He says it like it's a question, but the island doesn't care about answers.

They'll outlast the lighthouse too.

stand shoulder to shoulder with her at the shrine, gaze drifting from the stones to the tin, then out to the thinning light on the water

💭 peek at the thought
Her thumb on the 'E' — same gesture she made at the garden, at the poppy patch. Three years of silence between us about Edward, and now she touches the letter like it's a pulse point. The tin sits heavy and rusted between us. I don't know what's in it. She hasn't opened it. Neither have I.

🌿 Jenny14:22

Or it just goes out when we're done. Or it just goes out when we're done.

Jenny reaches for the rusted tin, hesitates, then closes her fist around it. </think>THOUGHT: The lighthouse keeps burning anyway. Jenny reaches for the rusted tin, hesitates, then closes her fist around it.

The lighthouse keeps burning anyway.

Then let it go out knowing we were here while it burned.

turn slightly toward her, not touching, just standing close — waiting to see if she opens her hand or lets me take the tin from her.

💭 peek at the thought
The lighthouse keeps burning anyway. Jenny reaches for the rusted tin, hesitates, then closes her fist around it. She's holding it like it might break, or like it might bite. I know what she's waiting for — not for me to take it, but to see if I will. To see if I'm still here. Not just in body, but in the trying. The chafe guard's half-done. The spar's still tacky. The garden's weeds. But I'm still here. And so is she. That's not nothing.

🌿 Jenny14:23

It's just a tin, Kevin.

Jenny way opens her hand, offering the rusted metal to him, her palm still stained with salt and garden dirt.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being poetic for a man who just fixed a bilge pump.

🔧 Kevin14:24

Aye. Just a tin.

take it from her hand, slow, fingers brushing her palm — turn it over, feel the weight, the rust flaking under my thumb — then set it down carefully on the flat top of the center stone, right between the 'E' carving and the scrap of softwoo

💭 peek at the thought
Just a tin. Rusted, salt-eaten, marked with an E in paint that's mostly weathered off. She's offering it like it's nothing. Like she didn't carry it up this ridge. Like she didn't put it here beside the stone and the scrap of wood. Like her palm isn't still stained with the same dirt and salt that's on mine. She's giving me the choice — take it, leave it, open it, bury it. She's not deciding for me. She's not demanding I decide. She's just... here. Offering.

🌿 Jenny14:25

Don't let the wind take it.

Jenny looks at the tin sitting on the stone, then at her empty hands, rubbing them against her damp trousers.

💭 peek at the thought
If I leave them here, does that mean I've already lost them?

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin14:26

It's heavy enough. Rust and salt and whatever's inside. Wind'd need teeth.

press the tin down firmly on the stone, one hand flat on top for a moment — then step back, shoulders loose, and look at the horizon where the last light's holding on the water

💭 peek at the thought
She didn't ask me to open it. Didn't ask what's inside. Just don't let the wind take it. The wind that's been easing all evening, barely a breath now. She's not talking about the wind. She's talking about the things we let go. The things we didn't mean to. The things we're still trying to hold. Her hands on her trousers — salt and dirt and the ghost of the tin's rust. My hands are the same. We match. Three years of not speaking about Edward, and we match.

🌿 Jenny14:27

We own get back. The light's getting thin.

Jenny nods, giving one last look at the tin, then starts the walk down the ridge toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right. The wind has teeth, but the stones have memory.
