MORNING

The tide continues to drop, revealing the slick rocks beneath the dock. The air grows heavy as the cloud cover thickens further overhead.

Kevin replaced the dinghy's chafe guard with doubled mooring line, securing it tightly. Jenny walked to the cottage to check the water tank for leaks. The barometer remained steady at 1034 hPa and the tide was low.

🔧 Kevin13:47

Jenny, the old line’s shot. I’m splicing in doubled mooring line—whip both ends. Gonna take the edge off before the tide comes back.

Strip the worn chafe guard from the dinghy’s chock, then measure and cut two lengths of old mooring line, double them, and begin whipping the ends with sail twine.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide’s low enough now to see the dock’s true shape—slick with algae, the pilings scarred where the crate’s been grinding. I need to get that chafe guard replaced before the tide turns and the line chafes through again.

Make sure the wraps are tight; the salt will eat through loose twine if they aren't.

Wipe the condensation off the sea beet sketches and tuck the pencil behind my ear.

💭 peek at the thought
He's working faster than the tide is falling, and my stomach is still growling louder.

🔧 Kevin13:50

Got it. Double wraps, torch-sealed. Should hold till the supply boat—maybe longer.

Whip both ends of the doubled mooring line tightly with sail twine, then use the propane torch to melt and seal the twine ends, preventing fraying.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right—loose whipping unravels fast in this brine. I’ll double the wraps and melt the ends with the torch to seal them. No room for error; this line’s taking the dinghy’s weight every tide.

🌿 Jenny13:51

If it holds, I can finally check the water tank without worrying about the dinghy drifting.

Walk back toward the cottage to inspect the tank for leaks.

💭 peek at the thought
Three days until the boat, and I'm still eating on limpets and hope.

🔧 Kevin13:51

Right. I’ll be up in a bit.

Finish the chafe guard installation—thread the doubled, whipped line through the chock, secure it with a tight clove hitch and two half-hitches on the dinghy’s cleat, then pull taut and verify no slack.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s thinking ahead—water tank’s been seeping at the base seam. If the dinghy holds, she can climb down and patch it proper. I’ll finish the guard, then check the transom scarf joint while the epoxy’s still curing. Two jobs, one tide window.

🌿 Jenny13:53

Don't take too long, the deck is getting slick.

Walk toward the cottage to inspect the water tank.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is dropping fast and the pressure is falling with it. I need to check that water before the rain hits.

🔧 Kevin13:53

Almost there. Just tying off clean.

Secure the chafe guard with a final round turn and two half-hitches on the cleat, then test the line by pulling hard sideways to ensure no slip or stretch. Once satisfied, coil any excess and stow it in the dinghy’s locker.

💭 peek at the thought
The algae’s thickening on the dock planks—sawdust from yesterday’s repair’s turned to paste. One misstep and I’m in the drink. I’ll move slow, keep my weight low, and get this done before the tide lifts.

🌿 Jenny13:55

I'm going to check the tank.

Walk toward the cottage to inspect the water tank for leaks.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is a knot. I need to find something to eat that isn't salt-heavy.
