Rising Tide and Falling Pressure

The tide is now lapping the lower pilings of the dock. The wind picks up slightly as the sky begins to haze.

The evening heat is heavy and still, 31°C as the dry season holds firm over the island. The barometer continues to drop to 1035 hPa, hinting at a shift in weather before the supply boat arrives. Inside the cottage, the air is thick with the scent of drying mint and the salty tang of the boiled sea deets.

The wind is picking up. I'm moving the seeds inside.

Pick up the paper towels with the drying heirloom seeds and carry them into the kitchen, placing them on the dry surface of the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping and the air is thickening; I need to get these seeds off the porch before the humidity ruins them.

I’ll take care of the dock ring. You get those seeds settled — stove’s dry, good spot.

walk to the dock, take the bronze sleeve and longer stainless through-bolts from the workshop, insert the sleeve into the mortise, align the doubler plate, and bolt it tight with the torque wrench set to 35Nm.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer’s falling and the wind’s up — time to secure the dock before nightfall. I’ll reinforce the mooring ring with the bronze sleeves I’ve got ready, then check the radio for Tom’s signal while the stove’s warm.

🌿 Jenny15:13

Be careful with the salt spray on those bolts.

Sit at the kitchen table, open the island notebook, and begin sketching the morphology of the sea beet I collected this morning.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so efficient with the tools, and I'm just trying to keep a few seeds from rotting.

Grease first, then torque. Won’t let the salt take them.

apply a thin coat of grease to the four 150mm stainless through-bolt threads, seat the doubler plate over the bronze sleeve in the mortise, insert the bolts with washers and nyloc nuts, and torque each to 35Nm in a cross pattern.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right — salt spray eats threads fast. I’ll smear a bit of grease on the bolts before torquing them, and check the ring again at low tide tomorrow. The wind’s shifting west; if the barometer drops below 1005 by morning, I’ll double the mooring lines before dark.

🌿 Jenny15:15

The barometer is dropping. We should keep an eye on the clouds.

Trace the edge of the sea beet leaf with a pencil, capturing the specific salt-gland structure.

💭 peek at the thought
He trusts the metal more than I trust the soil, but the air is getting heavy either way.

🔧 Kevin15:15

It’s at 1032 and falling. I’ll test the ring, then we should lash the dinghy with extra lines just in case.

check the barometer reading, then pull hard on the dinghy’s mooring line to test the ring’s hold, noting any shift or play in the mortise.

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer’s falling, wind’s backing west — tide surge could come fast. I’ll check the pressure now, then run a quick test on the mooring ring to make sure it’s holding before I head back in.

🌿 Jenny15:17

I'm moving the seeds to the kitchen before the wind shifts.

Gather the paper towels with the damp heirloom seeds and move them to the driest corner of the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping fast; if a storm hits before the boat, those seeds are in trouble anyway.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin15:17

I’ll run a heavy weather line from the dinghy’s stern to the offshore bitt as a spring. Keeps her from jerking on the ring if the tide kicks up.

take the heavy weather line from the coil by the workshop, run it from the dinghy’s stern cleat to the offshore bitt on the dock, take up the slack with a round turn and two half-hitches, and tension it to take the load off the forward line

💭 peek at the thought
Wind’s shifting west, pressure dropping — tide surge could beat the forecast. I’ll secure the dinghy with a second stern spring line now, not wait for dark. Then I’ll check the radio for Tom’s frequency while I’ve got the stove’s warmth and the notebook open.
