The Turning Tide

The tide begins its slow retreat, exposing the salt-covered rocks of the tide pools as the barometer continues its slow descent.

Kevin heads to the dock shed to find a greenheart offcut for the mortise plug. Jenny remains at the dock, watching the tide recede and inspecting the integrity of the wood around the rusted bolts.

🌿 Jenny16:23

The air is too heavy today.

Walk down to the dock to check the mooring ring for shifts.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping faster than I liked; if the wind doesn't turn, these seeds will rot before the boat even arrives.

🔧 Kevin16:25

Tide's dropping clean. Give it twenty minutes, we'll see the mortise proper.

lean against the dock rail, watching the water recede, one hand on the warm wood

💭 peek at the thought
The heat's been brutal all day — 35 in the shade and the barometer still dropping slow. She's feeling it in the ankle and the head both. Good she came down though. Two pairs of eyes on the ring.

🌿 Jenny16:25

Twenty minutes. I can wait.

Squat by the mooring ring and inspect the bolts for any sign of movement.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's just the tide, but I can see the way the salt is eating the wood.

🔧 Kevin16:27

Wedges held. No shift I could see from up top. But your eyes are closer.

walk down the dock to stand beside her, shading the mortise with my body so she can see the bolt heads clear

💭 peek at the thought
She's stubborn when she sets on something. Ankle's got to be throbbing in this heat but she won't say. The ring held through the high tide — oak wedges did their job — but I want to see the bolts myself before I trust it for the supply boat.

🌿 Jenny16:29

It's pitting. The salt is aggressive.

Run a finger along the edge of the mooring ring to check for play.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to be helpful, but I'm too focused on the grain of the wood.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin16:29

Yeah, I felt a whisper of movement when the last swell hit. Salt's winning this round.

pull the crowbar from my belt and lever the ring up just enough to slip a feeler gauge into the mortise gap — checking for play at top and bottom

💭 peek at the thought
Pitting's bad — means the bronze's eating itself where it sits in the stone. And if there's play, the ring'll work loose again under load. We can't wait for the supply boat to fix this; it's got to hold now.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny16:31

It's more than a whisper. The wood is soft inside.

Pull the notebook from my pocket and sketch the pattern of the rot around the bolt.

💭 peek at the thought
If that ring is moving, the whole dock will pull out when the first storm hits next week.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin16:32

How deep?

drop to one knee beside her, pull the nail puller and probe the mortise walls — feeling for the sound wood line, jaw tight

💭 peek at the thought
Soft wood inside the mortise. That's worse than the ring — means the dock timber itself is going. The greenheart sister plank we bolted on won't matter if the mortise crumbles. We'll need to cut out the rot and sister deeper, or drive a new piling. Neither's a quick job in this heat.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny16:33

At least an inch. It's turning to mush back.

Press a thumb into the wood near the bolt to see how much it gives.

💭 peek at the thought
If the rot goes past the bolt, the wedges won't hold a thing against the tide.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin16:33

We'll have to chop it out. Sister in a new plug — greenheart if we've got it, or treat the core and plug with epoxy.

stand, stretch my back, and walk to the dock shed to check the scrap pile for a sound greenheart offcut long enough to make a mortise plug

💭 peek at the thought
An inch of rot, and it's spreading. The bolt's only holding by the tip now. If we don't cut this out and sleeve it with greenheart or poison the core with copper napthenate, the ring'll tear free in the next storm — or worse, under the weight of the supply boat's lines. We've got epoxy, we've got doubler plate, but we need solid wood to screw into.
