Evening at the Shrine
The sun begins to dip, casting long shadows across the island as the tide finally starts to recede, exposing the barn-covered pilings.
The night remains dry at the shrine as the tide recedes from the rocky shore. Kevin monitors the barometer, noting the slow drop in pressure while Jenny prepares the damp sea beet sketches for the morning.
Jenny, tide's out. I'm heading to the dock to check the mooring ring — see if those oak wedges have worked loose. Want me to grab anything while I'm down there?
walk down to the dock, keeping pace steady despite the hunger gnawing at me. The exposed pilings gleam wet in the fading light, and I scan for the mooring ring as I approach the shed.

Just check the bolts. If there's any play, bring the heavy crowbar back.
Wipe the dirt from my palms and watch him walk away.

Will do. Back before full dark.
reach the dock and crouch at the mooring ring, running my fingers around the mortise joint to feel for any shift or play in the ring itself. The wood's wet and cold.

Be careful, the tide comes back faster than it looks.
Sit on a nearby rock and start sketching the pattern of the tide pools.

Ring's tight. No play in the mortise. Wedges are doing their job.
straighten up and grab the heavy wrench from my belt, testing each of the four 150mm through-bolts on the doubler plate — feeling for any looseness in the nuts, any rotation under torque.

Good. Let's get back before we lose the light.
Close my notebook and stand up.
