Evening at the Ridge

Kevin and Jenny meet at the stone circle as the sun begins to dip. The air is still, but the smell of coming rain is faint.

Kevin and Jenny hiked the north ridge to the old shrine as the evening heat began to break. They spent a moment in silence at the stone markers, noting the drop in barometric pressure before heading back to the cottage together.

🌿 Jenny23:45

It's so quiet up here. You can almost hear the pressure dropping.

Lean back against one of the weathered stones and look up at the cloudless sky.

💭 peek at the thought
He looks tired. We both do. The air feels too heavy, like it's holding its breath before the storm.

🔧 Kevin23:45

Yeah. Feels like the island’s holding its breath. Barometer’s down to 1022 now—faster than I thought.

Walk to the edge of the shrine, place a hand on the weathered stone marked 'E', then turn and head back toward the cottage at a steady pace, watching the sky to the west.

💭 peek at the thought
The air’s thickening. Storm’s not far. I should’ve checked the mooring ring before dusk—tide’ll turn soon, and that piling’s still groaning.

🌿 Jenny23:47

Jenny — stay leaning against the stone for a moment longer, watching his back as he walks away.

💭 peek at the thought
He didn't stay. He just touched the stone and left. He's already thinking about the rain and the engine and the walls.

🔧 Kevin23:47

Kevin — keep walking toward the cottage without looking back, boots crunching on the ridge path, one hand instinctively checking the radio pouch at my belt.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not coming. Not yet. Let her have the quiet.

🌿 Jenny23:49

I'm coming!

Push off the stone and follow him down the ridge, walking a few paces behind.

💭 peek at the thought
He's already gone back into his head. Everything is a checklist with him.

🔧 Kevin23:49

Pace yourself. The scree's loose near the spring.

Slow my stride fractionally, letting her set the rhythm, eyes scanning the path ahead for shifted rock.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. Don't want her out there when the wind shifts. Ankle'll stiffen on the descent.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny23:51

I know where the scree is, Kevin.

Walk a bit faster to close the gap, carefully picking my footing.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always managing the risk. Even when I'm the one who knows the soil.

🔧 Kevin23:51

Right. Sorry.

Fall into step beside her, shoulder nearly brushing hers on the narrow path, not quite reaching out.

💭 peek at the thought
She knows. She's walked this ridge more than I have lately. Just... let her walk.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny23:53

It's okay.

Glance up at him and give a small, tired smile, then look back at the path.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying. He's always just on the edge of reaching out, but the space between us feels like a canyon.

🔧 Kevin23:53

Cottage in ten. Fire's banked. Water on for tea.

Walk the last stretch of ridge path in step with her, the cottage roof catching the last light ahead of us.

💭 peek at the thought
That smile. First one in weeks. Cost her something. Cost me more not to reach for it.
