Midday work and radio check
Kevin is at the cottage reviewing engine logs and preparing for the noon shortwave schedule. Jenny is in the garden finishing heirloom planting and checking tarp corners.
Kevin spends the midday heat checking the Yanmar engine's vibration and monitoring the falling barometer. Jenny focuses on the garden, tending the tomato rows and checking for damping-off in the pepper seedlings.
You sit at the kitchen table with the Yanmar test log open, the vibration notes messy in pencil. The shortwave sits on the shelf, powered and warmed up. You adjust the antenna tuner, listening to the static floor. It's nearly noon. Tom's frequency is 6210 kHz. You key the mic: 'Sorrel Island, Sorrel Island, this is Kevin, over.'
Sorrel Island, Sorrel Island, this is Kevin, over.
hold the mic loose, thumb off the key, listen to the receiver hiss and wait for a reply

Kevin — log the contact attempt in the radio notebook — date, time, frequency, result: negative — then set the mic down and stretch

You press the last heirloom seeds into the damp soil of the north bed, covering them with a light sprinkle of crushed lime. The southeast tarp corner is battened down tight now, the tool bag heavy on the timber strip. You stand, wiping dirt from your hands, and scan the rows: tomatoes staked and twined, basil thriving, peppers and lettuce thinned by fungus.
Jenny — walk back to the cottage to check on the limpets.
