Evening at the shrine

Kevin and Jenny meet at the old shrine as the sun finally begins to dip, the air still heavy with dry heat.

The morning air is warm and dry as the trade wind hums through the spruce mast. The tide is rising steadily, covering the lower reef rocks and shifting the sand around the dock. Kevin and Jenny return to the cottage, focused on the tasks ahead before the boat's arrival.

The reef is showing more white than last week. Do you think the boat will make it?

Trace a finger over a weathered name carved into the stone.

💭 peek at the thought
He's quiet today, even for him. Is he worried about the boat tomorrow too?

Barometer's steady. Wind's trade. If the engine holds, they'll be here mid-morning.

lean back against the warm stone, arms crossed, eyes on the western horizon where the sun touches water

💭 peek at the thought
She's asking about the supply boat but looking at the names. The reef's been bleaching since March — I've logged it. She knows the answer. The boat comes or it doesn't. My saying so changes nothing.

I need to check the seedlings again. The damping-off is moving fast.

Pull the rusted seed tin from my pocket and feel the weight of it.

💭 peek at the thought
Mid-morning. That gives me enough time to finish the salt sketches before the boat leaves.

Pull and burn the affected cells. Don't wait for morning.

unfold arms, glance at the tin in her hand, then at the path back toward the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
She's carrying that tin like it's something precious. Or dangerous. She tested the seal at the shrine yesterday — watched her do it while the tide came in. Didn't ask why. Still don't know if I want to.

🌿 Jenny02:17

I know. I'll do it as soon as we get back.

Close the tin with a sharp click and start walking toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right. If I wait, the fungus will just travel through the soil.

Kevin — stand still at the shrine, watching her walk away, the stone at my back still warm

💭 peek at the thought
Sharp click. She's angry. Or scared. Or both. The tin clicks like a latch on something she doesn't want open. I'll follow. Third bolt needs drilling at first light before the supply boat — tide drops 0530. Need sleep. But my feet stay planted on this ridge a moment longer.
