Waiting for the slack tide

The tide is slack in twenty minutes. A bucket of cold water sits outside, waiting for the ankle soak.

The humidity hangs heavy over the shrine as the air thickens before the coming rain. Kevin kneels on the dirt, pressing the cold pack firmly against Jenny's inflamed calf, watching the red streaks that creep higher toward her knee. The tide is receding slowly, exposing the slick rocks of the shore, but the heat remains oppressive and still.

Kevin — walk to the bucket, pick up cold pack, carry it to the cottage porch where Jenny is

💭 peek at the thought
Slack tide in twenty. Need to get the cold pack on Jenny's ankle before the water turns, then get the mooring ring sorted while the dock's accessible. Her fever's the clock I'm watching.

🌿 Jenny04:49

I can do it myself, Kev.

Lean back against the porch railing and pull up the trouser leg to expose the calf.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being too quiet. I can tell he's counting the streaks in his head.

🔧 Kevin04:51

You can. But the water's cold now and it won't be in thirty minutes. Let me.

kneel beside her, press the cold pack against the inflamed streaks running up her calf, hold it steady

💭 peek at the thought
She's stubborn. Good. Means she's still fighting. But the streaks are angry and the heat off that leg hits me from three feet away. Cold pack first. Dock after.

🌿 Jenny04:51

It's higher today.

Close eyes and let out a long, shaky breath, leaning my head back against the wood.

💭 peek at the thought
The cold is a shock, but it's the only thing that stops the throbbing. I hate that he's seeing me like this—shrunken and shaking.

🔧 Kevin04:53

Yeah. It's higher.

keep the cold pack pressed firm, watch her face for the fever flush, thumb brushing sweat from her temple

💭 peek at the thought
Higher. Past the knee now, she's saying. The antibiotics should've bitten by now. Two doses gone. Nothing left in the kit but antiseptic and gauze. If the fever doesn't break by morning, the dinghy's the only way off this rock.

🌿 Jenny04:53

I'm not... I'm not going to let it win.

Open one eye and look down at his hand, then slowly reach down to touch his wrist.

💭 peek at the thought
He's terrified. I can feel it in the way his thumb is shaking just a little. I can't be the one to break the silence, not when I'm this weak.

🔧 Kevin04:55

I know you're not.

turn my wrist up so her hand rests in my palm, squeeze once — hard — then reach for the fresh gauze and antiseptic to re-dress the wound

💭 peek at the thought
Her fingers are hot. Burning hot. The pulse at her wrist hammers against my thumb — fast, thready. She's not letting it win. Neither am I. But wishing don't move the needle. The dinghy's ready. The engine holds. Slack tide in fifteen. If she's not better by dawn, I run it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny04:55

Don't be too gentle with the gauze.

Shift my leg slightly to give him better access to the wound.

💭 peek at the thought
That squeeze was a plea. He's trying to anchor me here. I need to eat something soon or I'm going to start shaking again.
