The Rising Fever

The thick mist clings to the porch, muffling the sound of the lapping. Jenny lies back on the bench with her ankle propped on a crate, shivering despite the heat. Kevin checks the barometer while watching the mist roll over the garden.

The mist clings heavy to the cottage, muffling the sound of the surf. The air is thick with humidity, holding the heat of the wet season despite the early hour. Jenny's fever is a point of concern as the barometer stubbornly rises against the predicted storm.

🌿 Jenny06:05

The barometer is dropping again. Is the boat coming?

Closes the notebook and winces as she shifts the weight of her leg.

💭 peek at the thought
The red line is moving faster than I drew it yesterday. If it hits the knee, I won't be able to walk to the radio.

Barometer's holding at 1032. Rising, not falling. Supply boat's six days out on paper. You're burning up again.

Press the back of my hand to her forehead, then reach for the thermometer on the kitchen shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
The mist's thick enough to swallow sound. Barometer's been rising steady at 1032, not dropping. She's running hot again — can see the flush from here. Boat's due in six days if it shows. Need to check her temp and log it, then get the Yanmar running for its load test before the tide turns.

🌿 Jenny06:07

Paper doesn't account for infection, Kevin.

Pulls away from his touch and wraps the blanket tighter around her shoulders.

💭 peek at the thought
Six days is an eternity when your blood feels like it's turning to lead from the ankle up.

🔧 Kevin06:07

Didn't say it accounted for anything. Just said what the paper says.

Hold the thermometer out to her, not pushing. Walk to the radio shelf and flip the power switch, letting the tubes warm.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Paper doesn't account for infection. Six days is forever when the fever's tracking. Coast guard said helicopter can't launch till the squall breaks. That was yesterday. Need the reading first, then the radio.

🌿 Jenny06:09

The paper doesn't have to feel this.

Takes the thermometer with a trembling hand and places it under her tongue, staring at the mist-choked garden.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always looking at the numbers while the world is eating me whole.

🔧 Kevin06:09

Three minutes. Keep it under.

Lean against the doorframe, arms crossed, watching the mist. One hand finds the radio mic. Key it. "Coast Guard, Coast Guard, this is Sorrel Island, Sorrel Island, on 2182. Over."

💭 peek at the thought
Three minutes for the reading. Three minutes to call the coast guard on 2182 and see if the squall's broken. Three minutes to decide if I'm firing up the Yanmar to chase the boat down myself — six days' sail in a dinghy with a cracked transom and a vibration I only mostly fixed. She won't last six days. The streaks were at her knee yesterday.

🌿 Jenny06:11

Jenny — keeps the thermometer firmly in her mouth, eyes fixed on the glowing light of the radio.

💭 peek at the thought
If they don't answer, I'm just another dead specimen on this rock.

🔧 Kevin06:11

Kevin — hold the mic loose in one hand, thumb near the key. Watch the mist swallow the garden. Count seconds in my head.

💭 peek at the thought
Static. Just static on 2182. The squall hasn't broken, or the radio's eating itself again. Wait the three minutes. Read the number. Then decide.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:14

Is anyone there?

Clenches her teeth around the plastic, shivering as the throb in her leg pulses with every heartbeat.

💭 peek at the thought
The static is the only thing talking back to me.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:14

Kevin — step close, take the thermometer from her mouth the second it beeps. Read it. "Thirty-nine point two." Set it down hard on the shelf. Key the VHF. "Mayday, Mayday, Mayday. This is Sorrel Island, Sorrel Island, Sorrel Island.

💭 peek at the thought
She can't wait for the coast guard to answer. The thermometer beeps — finally. Need that number. Then the VHF on 16, then the decision about the dinghy. The Yanmar held load yesterday. The transom patch held. Six days' sail. Maybe five if I push it. But the mist, the current, the night. And her.
