A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Inside the cottage, the air is thick with the scent of drying mint and the heavy humidity of the wet season. Jenny sits at the kitchen table, her face tight as she presses the cold compress against the swollen, angry heat of her ankle. Kevin watches the kettle hiss on the stove, the steam rising to meet the gloom while the tide recedes outside the window.

Water going on. Coffee?

walk to the kitchen, fill the kettle from the rain tank, set it on the wood stove, pull two enamel mugs from the shelf

💭 peek at the thought
Night's falling fast. Jenny's still on the porch. That letter didn't get finished. The barometer's holding but the sky's wrong — too flat, too heavy. Need to check the tank, get water on for coffee, and see if she'll eat something. The radio's been quiet too long.

🌿 Jenny06:57

way. Please.

Sit at the kitchen table, leaning my head back against the wall, and watch the steam start to rise from the kettle.

💭 peek at the thought
The red line moved today. I can feel it pulsing in my thigh. If I don't get this under control, I'll never see the heirloom seeds sprout.

Kevin — spoon coffee into the pot, pour hot water over it, let it steep, bring the pot and mugs to the table, set one in front of her without a word

💭 peek at the thought
She looks wrecked. The fever's still riding her. That leg's been hot to touch all afternoon. She said "way" — probably "yeah" or "okay" but it came out thin. Not pushing food yet. Just coffee. Let the steam do something.

🌿 Jenny06:59

thanks.

Wrap both hands around the warm mug, letting the heat seep into my palms, and take a slow, cautious sip.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being quiet today. He knows the infection is winning. He knows I'm a mess.

🔧 Kevin07:01

Kevin — sit opposite her with my own mug, blow across the surface, sip, watch the porch through the window — the tarp's holding, the generator's quiet, the tide's still falling

💭 peek at the thought
She's shaking. Fine tremor in the hands. Could be the fever, could be the antibiotics tearing her gut, could be the three days she's barely eaten. The mug's steadying her. Let it.

🌿 Jenny07:01

Jenny — set the mug down with a soft thud, reach for the island notebook, and flip to the page with the sea beet sketches.

💭 peek at the thought
My leg is throbbing in time with my heart. I need to see the wound again, but I can't even hold the pencil straight today.

🔧 Kevin07:03

Leg still hot?

reach for the cold pack on the counter, wrap it in the tea towel, slide it across the table toward her

💭 peek at the thought
She's documenting. Again. Like the sketches make the fever measurable, containable. The sea beet pages are clean work — salt glands, transect lines, elevation gradients. Her hand's steadier on the page than it was on the mug. That's something.

🌿 Jenny07:03

Every minute.

Pull the pack toward me, press the cold cloth against the swollen skin, and hiss through my teeth as the ice hits the heat.

💭 peek at the thought
It feels like a fire is under the skin. If that line doesn't stop before the boat comes, I'm done.
