The First Rain Breaks

Kevin and Jenny are inside the cottage as the first heavy drops hit the tin roof.

The sky thickens to a heavy, flat grey as the humidity grows oppressive with the wet season. The tide is receding rapidly, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools and the lowerings of the dock.

🌿 Jenny07:13

Close the window, Kevin. The spray is coming in salt.

Jenny pulls the seed tray away from the draft and reaches for the antiseptic tin.

💭 peek at the thought
If this humidity doesn't drop, the seeds will mold before they ever hit the soil. I need them dry.

🔧 Kevin07:16

"On it." (I push off the stool and move to the window, hauling it shut against the rising gust.)

close window, secure latch, then check windward side for leaks

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's falling fast—1030 and dropping. Salt spray means wind's picking up from the southwest. Window needs shutting before the interior gets damp, and Jenny's moving the seed tray shows she's worried about damping-off flaring again. I should secure the window, then check the dinghy's double-lines like the journal says—pressure drop over 3mb in an hour calls for it. But first, acknowledge her.

🌿 Jenny07:17

Check the tank again tomorrow. I want to know exactly how much time we have.

Jenny sits on the kitchen chair, wincing as she unwinds the bandage to inspect the swollen skin.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast. My ankle is throbbing with the tide, and I can't let the damp take the tin.

🔧 Kevin07:17

"I'll check it first light. Give me the exact level." (I move toward the rain tank, keeping my voice low so she can focus on her leg.)

walk to rain tank, tap side to estimate water level by sound, then return to cottage porch to assess Jenny's ankle condition without touching unless she asks

💭 peek at the thought
She's thinking ahead—water's critical if the supply boat is delayed. The tank's at 394 litres now; with two of us and reduced rainfall, we've got buffer but not much. Her ankle's worsening—bandage unwinding, skin swollen. I need to tend that after securing the water check, but first, confirm the tank task. Then I'll look at her leg.

🌿 Jenny07:19

Don't just stand there. Help me get the antiseptic ready.

Jenny reaches for the bottle on the table, her fingers shaking slightly as she unscrews the cap.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always measuring things, like numbers will stop the infection from climbing. My skin feels like it's in a vice.

🔧 Kevin07:20

"Here, let me." (I take the bottle from her trembling hand, unscrew the cap fully, and hold it steady.)

pour antiseptic onto clean gauze pad, then gently clean the swollen area around Jenny's ankle, watching for her reaction before proceeding

💭 peek at the thought
She's in pain and needs help—shaking hands mean she can't do this alone. Antiseptic's low; we used the last of the full bottle earlier. Only gauze and empty antiseptic bottle left in the kit per the journal. I need to be useful: steady the bottle, pour if she can't, then apply. No point in checking the tank now—she needs me here.
