Evening Walk to the Ridge

Kevin and Jenny walk together toward the hilltop as the sun begins to dip. The air is still still, and they approach the ring of weathered stones marked 'LB'.

Kevin traces the shallow carvings on the shrine stone, his fingers stiff and tacky from the day's epoxy. Jenny stands back, her notebook clutched to her chest, watching the shadows stretch long and thin across the ridge. The air is heavy with the sweet, overripe scent of ripening fruit drifting down from the interior woods.

LB. Lighthouse builder, maybe. Or a lover's initials. Never found a record.

Walk the last few metres to the stone ring, boots quiet on the turf, and crouch to trace the worn carving with a calloused fingertip.

💭 peek at the thought
The stones don't look like much in this light. Just a ring of greying rock half-swallowed by grass. But the names are still there if you know where to run your fingers.

It doesn't matter who they were. The island is still here.

Stand a pace back, clutching my notebook to my chest, and watch the shadows stretch across the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking for a name in the rock while I'm looking at the way the salt eats the stone.

Mm.

Straighten up, joints popping, and turn to face the cliffs where the last light catches the water. Hands find pockets.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The island doesn't care about names. But I do. Tom would've laughed at me for stopping here.

The lighthouse keeper's log mentioned something about the keeper carving names during the long nights. Thought it was his own. The lighthouse keeper's log mentioned something about the keeper carving names during the long nights. Thought it was his own.

Close my notebook slowly, feeling the weight of it like the weight of the day pressing down. </think>THOUGHT: He's looking out at the water where the current takes things, while I'm trying to read what the tide pool plants are saying to eac

His own, or the ones he lost?

Turn back toward the cottage, the path already dimming underfoot. One hand lifts, brief, toward the stones — not a wave, just acknowledgement.

💭 peek at the thought
The keeper carved names so he wouldn't forget them. Or so someone would know they existed. I've been carving the same three letters in my head for eighteen months.

🌿 Jenny07:53

Maybe the ones he lost carved themselves into the rock.

Keep my notebook closed and let the shadows gather around us.

💭 peek at the thought
The stones don't care who they were. They just remember being touched.

Could be.

Start down the ridge, pace slow for her ankle, boots finding the worn track by feel. The radio schedule sits in my chest like a stone.

💭 peek at the thought
That's a Jenny thought. Sharp and quiet and true. The rock doesn't choose what gets carved into it.

We need to check the generator logs tomorrow. The salt is winning.

Follow him down the path, watching his silhouette against the fading light.

Logs are on the shelf. Salt's been winning since we got here.

Keep walking, the cottage lights a faint smudge ahead through the palms. Left hand flexes, stiff and tacky, inside the pocket.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Salt gets into everything — windings, connections, the carburetor throat. But tonight the generator's running the dehumidifier at 60% duty and the epoxy tent is holding. One thing at a time.

🌿 Jenny07:58

There's a difference between winning and winning completely, Kevin.

Walk slightly faster to catch up to him, the gravel crunching under my boots.

💭 peek at the thought
He's dismissing it. He always dismisses the slow decay until it's a total failure.
