The Rain Breaks

The first heavy drops of rain hit the dust on the porch, and the wind picks up from the north.

Kevin spent the afternoon tending to the dock and checking the mooring lines while the tide rose. Jenny stayed inside the cottage to treat her inflamed ankle, draining fluid and applying antiseptic. A heavy wooden crate from a lost ship washed up in the surf near the shore.

Rain's here. Wind north. Going to check the dock and dinghy before the tide turns.

walk down to the dock

💭 peek at the thought
Front's moving faster than the barometer suggested. North wind means the swell will wrap around the headland and hit the dock broadside. Need to check the mooring ring and the dinghy lines before the tide peaks.

🌿 Jenny09:15

Take the radio. I'm staying inside to deal with this ankle.

grab the first aid kit and the antiseptic, sit at the kitchen table, and unwrap the bandage from my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If he goes out in that swell, he'll lose the dinghy or himself, and I can't help him today.

🔧 Kevin09:15

Right. Radio first.

grab the shortwave radio from the shelf and head for the dock

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the radio. If the antenna lead goes again in this squall, I'll need to call the supply boat on short notice. And she shouldn't be walking on that ankle with the tide coming up.

🌿 Jenny09:17

Be careful with the lines, they're slick.

apply antiseptic to the wound and flinch as the sting hits the inflamed skin.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing with every heartbeat; if I don't get this infection out now, I won't be able to walk the ridge.

🔧 Kevin09:17

Lines are new. Half-inch three-strand. They'll hold. Back before the tide peaks.

walk down the path to the dock, radio in hand

💭 peek at the thought
She's worried about the lines, but she's worried about me. The ankle's healing — she flinched but didn't stop. That's the measure of it.

🌿 Jenny09:19

Jenny — carefully drain the fluid from the wound with the tweezers, watching the red spread across the skin.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so sure of the gear, but the island doesn't care about tensile strength; it only cares about the rot and salt.

🔧 Kevin09:19

(nothing — alone on the dock)

step onto the dock, test the mooring ring for movement, check the four 150mm stainless through-bolts and the oak wedges in the mortise

💭 peek at the thought
Dock planks are slick with rain and salt. Mooring ring showed play last check — oak wedges split under load. Greenheart sister plank's bolted but floating on a scoured void. Driftwood braces are temporary. If the north swell hits at high tide with this wind, the ring could work loose. Need to verify the wedges and the through-bolts before the water's up to the beam.

🌿 Jenny09:21

(Quietly)

pick up the notebook and sketch the inflammation on my ankle, my hand shaking too much to be precise.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast for a calm crossing; he's going to get caught in the surge.
