Pre-Tide Inspection
Kevin and Jenny stand on the reinforced dock as the tide begins to recede. Kevin checks the tension on the oak wedges in the mooring ring while Jenny monitors the falling barometer in the heavy, still air.
The air is heavy and still as dawn breaks over the grey-toned dock. Kevin checks the dinghy's lines under the pressure of the rising tide, while Jenny inspects the seed trays for further signs of fungal growth in the humid heat.
Wedges are seated. Ring doesn't move when I lean on it.
Step back from the mooring ring, wipe hands on trousers, glance at the barometer in her hand.

It's holding for now. But the pressure is still sliding.
Look down at the barometer, then glance toward the horizon.

How fast?
Turn toward the horizon, shielding eyes against the grey light, scanning the water line.

Faster than the last drop. We need to have the dinghy secured before tonight.
Shift weight off the left ankle, wincing as the throb pulses in the heat.

Dinghy's got double lines already. Need to check the chafe guards on the forward spring — new rope's good but the old fairlead'll eat it.
Walk toward the dinghy at the end of the jetty, favouring the left side slightly, testing the forward spring line tension by hand.

Check it carefully. I don't want to be fishing the boat out of the surf at midnight.
Lean against a sturdy piling, watching him work while trying to breathe through a spike of pain in the ankle.
