The Ridge Stones

Kevin and Jenny walk up the ridge as the light fades. They stand together within the ring of weathered stones, looking out over the island.

The air at the shrine is heavy with humidity, smelling of salt and impending rain earth. The barometer has dropped to 1015 hPa, signaling the inevitable break in the overcast. Kevin and Jenny stand by the weathered stone marker, the wind picking up as the last of the light catches the gold on the cliff faces.

🌿 Jenny10:12

The wind is shifting. It'll be coming off the cliffs soon.

Lean slightly against one of the weathered stones to take the weight off the ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
It's too quiet. I can feel the throb in my ankle keeping time with my heart. I wonder if the people whose names are on these stones felt this small.

🔧 Kevin10:13

Mm. Northeast by midnight if the glass holds.

Walk slowly around the stone ring, fingertips brushing the carved names worn smooth by salt and time, stopping at the softwood scrap I left here — the one marked 'I'm still here' — and the rusted tin marked 'E' beside it.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the breeze is already turning cold off the water. The barometer's been steady but that northeast fetch will push it down by morning.

🌿 Jenny10:15

Someone else was here a long time ago. The tin is still sealed.

Watch his face, keeping my weight shifted carefully on my good leg.

💭 peek at the thought
He found it. I didn't think he'd notice that little piece of wood. I wonder if he thinks it's a plea or a boast.

🔧 Kevin10:15

Was here when I got here. Eleven months. Never touched it.

Crouch beside the tin, brush lichen from the lid with my thumb. The rust flakes come away easy. Turn it in my hands — weight's right for seed, maybe a letter. No seam visible, soldered shut. Set it back exactly where it was.

💭 peek at the thought
She noticed the tin. Good. Means she's seeing the island, not just the pain. The 'E' tin was here when I arrived — sealed, heavy, sitting in the lichen at the base of the center stone. Never opened it. Felt like breaking a contract I didn't sign.

🌿 Jenny10:17

I'm not ready to know what's in there yet.

Look out toward the cliffs, tracing the line of the horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
He didn't try to open it. He respects the boundary. I appreciate that, even if I'm too tired to say it.

🔧 Kevin10:17

It'll keep. Salt and solder don't rush.

Straighten, hands in jacket pockets. Watch the last light catch the cliff faces — grey turning gold at the edges. The wind picks up a strand of her hair. Don't reach for it. Just breathe.

💭 peek at the thought
Neither am I. But she said 'yet' — means she's thinking about staying long enough to find out.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:18

We should head back. I'm... I'm starting to shake.

Push off the stone and take a tentative, cautious step toward the ridge path.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so careful with me lately. Like I'm one of the diseased seedlings that might just collapse if he touches me too hard.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin10:19

Come on. I'll take the pack.

Step in close, shoulder sliding under the strap of her daypack before she can protest. Free hand finds the small of her back — steadying, not holding. Start walking down the ridge path at her pace, boots finding the worn track in the dark.

💭 peek at the thought
The cold's biting through her layers. Ankle's burning too — she's been on it all day. Should've turned back twenty minutes ago.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:21

I can still carry it.

Let him take the pack anyway, leaning into his shoulder as they descend the path.

💭 peek at the thought
I hate needing this. I hate that he knows exactly how much I'm leaning into him. But the hunger is making me dizzy.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin10:21

I know you can. Doesn't mean you have to.

Adjust the pack higher on my shoulder, shorten my stride to match her limp. The path drops steep here — loose shale over bedrock. Place my boot careful on each step so she can follow the same line. Don't look at the drop.

💭 peek at the thought
She's stubborn. So am I. The weight's nothing — three kilos of notebook, water, the spare radio battery. Her leaning into me is everything.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:23

I've got my balance, Kevin.

Carefully step exactly where he stepped, eyes fixed on the grey shale.

💭 peek at the thought
He's doing that thing again. Mapping the safe path for me. It's kind, and it's infuriating.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin10:23

Never said you didn't.

Keep walking. The cottage lights show faint through the gorse ahead — the storm lantern on the porch, the generator's hum just audible over the wind. Two hundred metres. One foot after the other.

💭 peek at the thought
She's mapping my footsteps like I mapped the Carex transect — precise, deliberate, trusting the data. Good. Means she's not panicking.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:25

I can smell the mint.

Limp forward, focusing on the glow of the lantern through the scrub.

💭 peek at the thought
Almost there. Just a few more steps and I can get the boots off. I can't stand the feeling of the dressing rubbing against the leather.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin10:25

Tea'll be hot by the time we're through the door.

The porch steps come up fast in the dark. Stop at the bottom, turn half-sideways to offer a steady shoulder. The lantern throws long shadows across the boards.

💭 peek at the thought
Good nose. The mint's on the porch tray, drying for tea. Means the air's still enough to carry scent uphill — or the wind's shifted back inshore. Either way, the lantern's still burning. Generator's steady. Home's waiting.
