The Turning Tide

The tide begins to push back, threatening to cover the lower pools as the rain begins to intensify.

Kevin explores the tide pools as the water recedes, successfully harvesting a large amount of limpets. Jenny stays near the shore, struggling to manage her swollen ankle while documenting local flora as the humidity presses in.

🌿 Jenny12:45

Kevin, the tide is turning earlier than the charts.

Grab the notebook from the rock and** it under my arm, moving toward the cottage door.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is coming in too fast; if I don't move the sketches now, the paper will be ruined by the salt. My ankle is throbbing from just trying to stand.

🔧 Kevin12:45

Behind you.

work the last pool for limpets, knife quick in the crevices, bucket filling, then up the rock shelf fast before the surge catches the boots

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — charts don't account for the wind piling water against the shore. Tide's pushing hard now, and the lower shelves are already swallowing. Good she's moving.

🌿 Jenny12:47

Leave the bucket, come!

Step onto the porch and close the heavy door against the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving faster than I am today. I need to get inside and debride this mess before it gets worse.

🔧 Kevin12:47

Right.

drop the bucket on the shelf, scramble up the wet rock, through the garden gate and onto the porch in three long strides

💭 peek at the thought
She's not asking. Wind's torn the rain sideways now — this isn't waiting weather. Bucket's twenty kilos wet. Leave it.

🌿 Jenny12:49

You're dripping everywhere. Get inside.

Lean against the doorframe and head toward the kitchen table, clutching the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He's finally here. I need to sit down before this ankle feels like it's going to give out.

🔧 Kevin12:49

Kettle's on.

strip the oilskin by the door, hang it dripping, cross to the stove and light the burner under the kettle without looking — done it blind a thousand times

💭 peek at the thought
She's shivering. Noticed it in the doorway — hands white-knuckled on the notebook, shoulders up by her ears. Kitchen's warm. Get her there.

🌿 Jenny12:51

The tide came in fast. I almost lost the sketches.

way heavily in the chair and pull my ankle up own the table.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the water is hot. I need to look at this ankle before the infection moves up my leg.

🔧 Kevin12:51

Sit still. I'll bring it.

pour two mugs, drop in the last of the mint sprigs, carry them to the table and set one in front of her before taking the other side

💭 peek at the thought
Ankle's swollen again. She's been on it too much today — tide pools, garden, hauling that notebook back in the wind. Should've made her stay put. Kettle's singing. Tea first, then look at it proper.

🌿 Jenny12:53

It's throbbing today. The pressure change.

reach for the bandage and start to unwrap it with shaking fingers.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to be helpful, but the skin is too tight. I need to see how far the red goes.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin12:53

Give it here.

set my mug down, lean across the table and take over the unwrapping, slow and steady, thumbs finding the edges of the gauze

💭 peek at the thought
Fingers won't hold the knot. Barometer's dropped three more points since noon — she feels it in the bone. Let me.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:55

It's deeper than yesterday. The salt must have gotten under

lean back in the chair and watch him peel the fabric away from the skin.

💭 peek at the thought
His hands are steady. Mine aren't. I can see the heat now, the angry red near the bone.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin12:55

Salt and pressure. Bad combination.

peel the last of the gauze free, lay it on the tin lid, reach for the antiseptic bottle on the shelf — empty. Set it back. Grab the boiled water jug and clean cloth instead.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Red line tracking up from the heel — two inches past where the lancing was. Heat radiating off it. The cefalexin's not holding. Need the last two doses, then we're out. And the antiseptic's gone.
