The Thickening Sky

Kevin and Jenny sit on the porch as the sky flattens over the island. Jenny examines the damp sea beet sketches on the table while Kevin monitors the barometer.

The air is heavy with humidity, and the flat sky is darkening as the clouds roll in. The tide is rising, pushing water up the dock pilings. Jenny sits on the porch, nursing her throbbing ankle while Kevin works in the garden to secure the seedlings before the predicted rain hits.

🌿 Jenny12:20

The barometer is at 1002 and falling. We need to secure the tarp on the way beds tonight.

Jenny traces the edge of a sea beet sketch in the notebook, wincing as her ankle throbs.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping again; if the storm hits before the boat comes, the garden is lost to salt and mud.

On it. I’ll take a look at the tarp lines and re-stake the corners before dark.

walk to the garden, check the tarp corners on the way beds, re-stake any lifted edges with timber strips, and weight them down with rocks from the path.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer’s fall is steady but not yet critical—1002 hPa and dropping slow. She’s right about the tarp, though. Wind’s picking up with the tide, and those way beds are exposed. I’ll move on it before the rain hits hard. Her ankle’s bothering her again—I saw her wince. She’s pushing through, same as always. I should say something, but words feel heavy today. Better to act than speak.

🌿 Jenny12:22

Make sure you use the heavy stones from the ridge, the wind is already picking up.

Jenny opens the notebook to a fresh page and begins sketching the cellular structure of the sea beet's leaf base.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's being useful for once, though the wind is going to rips those stakes out.

🔧 Kevin12:23

Ridge stones. Got it.

walk up to the north ridge, gather four heavy flat stones, carry them back to the garden, and use them to weight the tarp corners on the way beds, cinching the lines tight against the gusts.

💭 peek at the thought
She knows the ridge stones hold better than the loose ones by the path. Smart. Wind's already riffling the shade cloth over the tomatoes—gusting, not steady. That means squall line's closer than the radio said. I'll grab the big stones and batten it proper. Her hand's steadier on the page than yesterday. Good sign.

🌿 Jenny12:24

If those move, the whole heirloom bed is gone. Check the south-side too.

Jenny shifts her weight on the porch, bracing against the sharp pain in her ankle, and focuses her pencil on the paper.

💭 peek at the thought
I hope those rocks hold; the wind is starting to howl through the stone gaps.

🔧 Kevin12:24

South side first. Then the ridge.

walk to the garden's south edge, inspect the tarp battening, reinforce any loose corners with timber strips and stones, then move to the north ridge stones and secure the remaining corners.

💭 peek at the thought
South side's the exposed face—takes the full fetch off the channel. If the tarp lifts there, the wind gets under it and peels the whole thing. She's not wrong. Ankle's flaring again; I can see her bracing. Should've wrapped it tighter this morning. I'll check the south edge first, then the ridge stones on the north. Two minutes max.

🌿 Jenny12:25

Watch the tension on the south corner; the gust is catching it like a sail.

Jenny stops own to watch him, her pencil hovering over the damp paper.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving fast, but the wind is gaining strength; I need those lines to hold.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin12:26

Seen it. Cinching now.

grab the loose south corner, pull the tarp tight, drive a fresh oak stake through the grommet, hammer it deep, and cinch the line with a trucker's hitch to hold tension against the gusts.

💭 peek at the thought
She's got eyes on it from the porch—good angle. The south corner's billowing, the batten line slack where the timber strip pulled loose. Gusts hitting it hard, low and flat off the water. If that corner goes, the whole tarp peels. Need to cinch it now, not later.

🌿 Jenny12:27

Good. Now get the ridge stones—the sky is turning a bruised shade.

Jenny returns to her sketch, carefully rendering the intricate morphology of the sea beet's salt glands.

💭 peek at the thought
The tension looks right, but that wind is going to test every stake we have.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin12:29

On it.

walk up to the north ridge, collect four heavy flat stones, carry them back to the garden, and place them on the tarp corners over the heirloom beds, weighting each line down hard against the rising wind.

💭 peek at the thought
Sky's gone that purple-grey near the horizon—squall wall, not far off. Ridge stones are heavy, flat, and sit low. Good ballast. I'll haul four, two trips if I have to. Wind's steadying now, sustained. Rain'll follow within ten minutes. She's drawing salt glands. Hand's steady. That matters.
