Dawn - approaching rain
The first heavy drops of rain hit the tin roof as the wind begins to howl. Kevin and Jenny retreat inside the cottage.
Kevin secured the cottage shutters and generator against the approaching storm while Jenny monitored the radio and checked the water tank. The barometer continued falling to 1000 hPa as high tide peaked.
Shutters first. Generator second. You sit.
Walk to the seaward windows and secure the heavy wooden shutters with the iron bars, checking each latch twice.

I can help with the generator, Kevin. I'm not an invalid.
Limp slowly toward the kitchen table and set the notebook down, gingerly hoisting the infected ankle up onto a chair.

Sit. I'll do the generator. You watch the radio — barometer's dropping.
Move to the porch where the generator sits, pull the ratchet straps tight over the frame, cinch each corner to the eye bolts in the floor, and test each one with a hard tug.

way. But if the<strong> cuts out, I'm calling you in. ownDO: Sit at the kitchen table and open the radio, watching the needle on the dial.

Generator won't cut out. New diaphragm, clean oil, full tank. But if the aerial goes, you'll hear the static first. Call me then.
Finish the last ratchet strap on the generator, wipe hands on a rag, and step back inside to check the shortwave connections and coaxial seal at the mast base.

It's too quiet. I don't like how quiet the radio is.
Reach for the water tank gauge and check the level, then lean back and stare at the red line tracking up my ankle.
