Afternoon heat and ripening fruit

The humidity thickens as the overcast clouds lower slightly. The scent of ripening fruit drifts from the woods toward the cottage.

The air is thick and heavy, smelling of salt and impending rain. The pressure is dropping, and the tide is receding rapidly, leaving slick rocks and drying tide pools exposed. The heat is stagnant, offering no cooling breeze.

🔧 Kevin13:40

Kevin — stand up from the table and walk to the porch door, scanning the sky and the dock

💭 peek at the thought
The air's gone heavy. Smell of fermenting fruit on the wind — figs maybe, or the wild plums up the ridge. Barometer's still sliding. She's out there somewhere. I should check the dinghy lines again before the swell builds.

🌿 Jenny13:40

It's going to rain. I can feel the pressure.

Jenny wipes her hands on her apron and stands up slowly, wincing as she shifts weight off her left ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat is a physical weight, and my leg is throbbing in time. If that boat doesn't come in eight days, I'm useless.

🔧 Kevin13:42

Barometer's at nine-ninety-three and dropping. I'll fill the tank before the track turns.

grab the two plastic jerrycans from the porch corner and head down the path toward the spring

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the ankle again. Swelling's up from the walk yesterday. Rain means the track to the spring gets slick. I'll haul water now while the path's still dry.

🌿 Jenny13:42

Be careful, the slope is already getting slick.

Jenny sits back down at the kitchen table and unwinds the bandage from her ankle to inspect the red streaks.

💭 peek at the thought
If he goes out in that humidity, the path will be a mess. I need to check the swelling before it gets any worse.

🔧 Kevin13:44

Won't be long.

walk briskly down the worn path toward the spring, jerrycans banging against legs

💭 peek at the thought
Red streaks tracking up from the bite. That's not good. She needs the antibiotic we don't have. I'll get water fast and check the first aid kit again — maybe there's something left I missed.

🌿 Jenny13:44

Jenny — jenny reaches for her notebook and a pencil to trace the boundary of the redness on her skin.

💭 peek at the thought
The streaks are moving. Closer to the knee now. If I lose the leg, I'll never open that seed tin.

🔧 Kevin13:46

Kevin — reach the spring, set down cans, and submerge the first one in the cold flow

💭 peek at the thought
Spring's close. Path's holding so far. Need to move quick — fill both cans, get back before the slick takes hold. Her ankle's the priority once I'm back.

🌿 Jenny13:46

It's getting hot.

Jenny presses the pencil to the edge of the infection, marking it with a thin line.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is clear, but the air is like wet wool. I need to see if the antibiotics are actually working.
