Midday work and infection check
Kevin is at the dock preparing shim stock for the mast bracket repair; Jenny is in the woods gathering purslane and wild mustard for seed saving while monitoring her ankle.
The midday heat lingers under a heavy overcast sky, the air still and dry at 28°C. The tide is high, leaving the tide pools submerged and the dock pilings dripping. On the island, the focus shifts to the upcoming supply boat; the manifest and medevac forms are being organized to prepare for the arrival in three days.
You stand at the dock's edge with the cut shim stock in hand, watching the tide rise toward the sistered beam. The greenheart plank holds, but the scoured void beneath still worries you. You test the mooring ring — the oak wedges hold fast. The dinghy rides easy on its doubled stern springs.
Kevin — walk back to the cottage, stow the shim stock in the workshop drawer, and check the barometer again.

Kevin — walk up to the cottage porch, sit at the radio desk, and power on the shortwave to monitor 4075 kHz early.

Kevin — leave the radio on low volume, scanning, and walk to the kitchen to check the water tank level and start something for lunch.

You move slowly along the wood's edge, basket on your good hip, ankle brace tight and hot. Purslane carpets the damp hollows — you gather the thickest stems, shaking soil from roots. Wild mustard bolts in the sunlit gaps; you strip seed pods into a paper envelope, labeling it with a charcoal stub. Every few steps you pause, breathing through the ankle's pulse. The barometer holds steady at 990.
Just a few more steps.
sit on a fallen log, wipe sweat from my eyes, and inspect the swelling of my ankle.

Stay put, Jenny.
