← Day 372

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the tide pools

Midday radio watch and medevac decision

Kevin sits at the shortwave radio in the cottage calling the supply boat on 4075 kHz; Jenny tends her ankle at the tide pools, soaking it in cold seawater.

Kevin examined Jenny's infected ankle and found the red streaks had advanced past mid-calf toward her knee, confirming the infection is spreading despite her self-care. Jenny marked the infection boundary with pen, then tightly wrapped her ankle and limped back to the cottage where she began sorting heirloom seed packets while the infection worsened.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You crouch under the cottage awning with the shortwave handset, rain sheeting off the roof. The dial sits on 4075 kHz. You key the mic: 'Supply boat, supply boat, this is Sorrel Island, over.' Static answers. You glance at the dock — the dinghy bobs at its painter, mast bracket untested. The tide is high now, water lapping the lowest planks.

🔧 Kevin06:35

Kevin — walk to the cottage door and step inside to check Jenny's ankle

💭 peek at the thought
The radio's dead quiet on 4075. Supply boat's two days overdue now. Hurricane Isaias tracking northwest per the last forecast — maybe they're sheltering, maybe they're not coming. Jenny's ankle needs eyes on it by noon. If the red streaks haven't receded, I call medevac whether the boat answers or not.

🔧 Kevin06:38

Kevin — open the cottage door and go inside

💭 peek at the thought
Need to see the ankle before noon. If the infection's tracking past the knee, no more waiting — medevac call goes out on 4075 at 0600 tomorrow regardless. The supply boat can find us or not.

🔧 Kevin06:42

Jenny. Let me look at your ankle.

walk over to where she's sitting and crouch down to examine her ankle

💭 peek at the thought
Inside now. Generator hum steady. Smell of boiled water and honey on the air — Jenny's been at the ankle. Need to see it proper.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the tide pools

You ease your foot into a tide pool at the reef's edge, the cold water biting the heat in your calf. The red line shows pale against wet skin, stopped for now at the knee's shadow. You watch small fish dart over your toes, counting breaths. The rain falls soft on the water's surface. You have until noon to decide what you'll tell Kevin.

🌿 Jenny06:37

Jenny — trace the edge of the red line with a trembling finger, then mark the skin with a ballpoint pen.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come in two days, I won't be able to walk to the radio. The infection is winning the race.

🌿 Jenny06:41

Not yet. Please, not before I plant the seeds. ownDO: Wrap the ankle tightly in a clean cloth and limp back own the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
The pen mark is already behind the line I drew an hour ago. It's moving faster than I can walk.

🌿 Jenny06:45

Jenny — sit on the kitchen chair and open the heirloom seed tin, staring at the damp packets.

💭 peek at the thought
My leg is throbbing in time with my heart. If I can't get to the garden, the seeds will just rot in that tin.
