← Day 376

Apart — Kevin at the keeper's cottage, Jenny at the north cliffs

Midday at the cottage and the north cliffs

Kevin is at the keeper's cottage preparing to check Jenny's leg and repair the dock mooring ring; Jenny is at the north cliffs sketching succulent growth.

Kevin spent the morning inspecting the dock's mooring ring, finding the mortise to be loose and shifting under tension. Jenny climbed to the north cliffs, meticulously documenting the local flora in her notebook while the heat began to rise.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the keeper's cottage

You sit beside Jenny on the porch, roll up her trouser leg, and press gently along the calf — skin warm, swelling firm but no angry red lines tracking upward. Good. You fetch the spare antibiotic blister pack from the first aid kit, tap two pills into your palm, and set them on the windowsill: a decision held in reserve.

🔧 Kevin10:06

Kevin — check the dock mooring ring at low tide, bring epoxy and oak wedges

💭 peek at the thought
The streaks haven't climbed past the knee. That's something. But the swelling's firm and the skin's hot — cephalexin's not touching whatever this is. Two pills on the sill. If they're not better by morning, I break the seal on the spares and radio the trust. No more waiting.

🔧 Kevin10:10

Kevin — walk down to the dock with epoxy tub and oak wedges, inspect mooring ring mortise at low tide

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's dropping. Dock first. The ring shifted last surge — oak wedges held but the mortise is chewed out. Steel doubler plate's bolted, but if the timber behind it's gone, bolts just spin in rot. Need to see what's left at low water.

🔧 Kevin10:14

Kevin — fetch the crowbar and greenheart offcuts from the dock strip, start chiseling out the rotted mortise to solid timber

💭 peek at the thought
Mortise is rotten through — oak wedges won't grip. Doubler plate's solid but bolts are chewing through soft timber. Need to cut back to sound wood and sister in a greenheart plug before I can reset the ring. No shortcuts.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the north cliffs

You follow the path up to the north cliffs, notebook in hand, ankle protesting every step. The wind is sharper here, carrying salt spray. The succulents clinging to the rock face are flowering — tiny yellow blooms you haven't seen before. You sketch fast, fingers stiff, noting the salt glands on the new leaves. Below, the tide is still low, exposing the channel rocks.

🌿 Jenny10:08

Stay still, you little bastards.

Make a detailed scientific illustration of the yellow succulent flowers and the salt-gland leaf morphology in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
I need to capture these flowers before the light shifts; the structure is unlike anything in the herbarium.

🌿 Jenny10:12

Come on, Jenny, one more ridge.

Close the notebook, pocket the pencil, and begin the slow descent back toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping again; I can feel it in my joints before the barometer even shows it.

🌿 Jenny10:16

I'm back.

Enter the cottage, set the notebook on the table, and look for Kevin's leg.

💭 peek at the thought
Kevin's ankle better be looking better or I'm going to lose my mind today.
