Securing the Shade Cloth

Kevin is crouched by the tomato rows, tensioning the remaining shade cloth corners against the rising wind. Jenny sits on the low garden wall, propping her ankle on a crate while she watches the water levels in the tank.

Kevin spent the morning tending to Jenny's wound, checking for signs of infection while the humidity rose in the garden. Jenny focused on documenting the morphology of the seaets as the tide began to recede.

Kevin, check the knots on the north side again; the wind is picking up.

Jenny pulls out her notebook and begins to sketch the tension in the fabric, her hand shaking slightly.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast, and if that way rips, the seedlings will be shredded by morning.

On it. Hold the corner down while I reeve the line.

Grab the loose end of the shade cord, pull it tight through the grommet, and secure it with a round turn and two half-hitches, then tuck the tail. Test the tension by giving the cloth a sharp tug—it should sing, not slap.

💭 peek at the thought
The north corner’s still loose—wind’s getting under it, flapping the cloth like a sail. If it tears, we lose the tomatoes. Jenny’s watching me, waiting. Her ankle’s propped up, but I can see the red’s crept higher since yesterday. She’s trying to be useful, sketching instead of stewing. I owe her focus.

It's tight enough for now, but watch the grommets.

Jenny leans forward, pressing her weight against the wall to stabilize the cloth while he works.

💭 peek at the thought
If that holds, the salt spray won't kill the new growth before they root.

Grommets’ll hold. Rope’ll chafe first. Got spare chafe guard in the crate if it starts sawing.

Finish the last corner—same knot, pull it drum-tight, check the cloth’s evenly tensioned across all four points. Stand back, squint up at the whole spread, nod once. Walk back toward the cottage, wiping hands on trousers.

💭 peek at the thought
Grommets are the weak point—canvas tears before rope breaks. She’s bracing the cloth with her bad leg, jaw set. Stubborn. The wind’s gusting steady now, cold off the water. Barometer’s still dropping.

🌿 Jenny10:58

I'll get the guard if I see fraying.

Jenny watches him go, then winces as she shifts her weight, the throbbing in her ankle pulsing with her heart.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the chafe, but I don't have the energy to climb again.

(nothing—already at the cottage door)

Step inside, go straight to the first aid kit on the shelf. Pull out the metronidazole blister pack, the last of the saline, clean gauze, the ballpoint pen. Set them on the kitchen table.

💭 peek at the thought
She's hiding it. The wince, the way she's breathing shallow. Red streaks past the knee means the cephalexin's failing. Metronidazole's the only thing left in the kit that'll touch anaerobic spread. Need to change the dressing, check the margins, start the reserve course if the line's moved. She'll argue. She always argues. But the medevac forms are on the radio shelf and the boat's seven days out in weather that'll turn ugly before noon.
