Limpet broth and a vibrating engine

Rain hammers the cottage roof. Kevin comes in from the dock, wet and frustrated. Jenny sits at the table with a steaming bowl of limpet broth and rice, her ankle propped on a stool, the redness visible above the brace. The barometer reads 993 hPa steady. The supply boat is due in five days.

Kevin removed the mast bracket from the dinghy and confirmed the bolt holes were elongated, then began machining bronze sleeves to re-bush them on center. Jenny monitored her ankle infection, noting the red streaks had not advanced past the previous mark, and transmitted a brief status check on the shortwave at six o'clock as planned.

🌿 Jenny12:53

The broth is getting cold, Kevin. Sit down.

Takes a slow sip of broth, winces as the heat in her ankle throbs.

💭 peek at the thought
way's dripping all over the floor again. I don't even have the energy to tell him to step on the mat.

🔧 Kevin12:53

Vibration's still in the transom. Bracket's pulling the shaft off centre past half throttle. Ate up two minutes of fuel proving what I already knew.

peel off the oilskin jacket, hang it on the porch hook, pull out the chair opposite her and sit down, reach for the bowl

💭 peek at the thought
The vibration's still there. Mast bracket's skewed, pulling the transom off true under load. Could shim it another tenth, but the bolts are finger-tight plus a quarter — any more and the greenheart splits. Need to think on it. Right now, she's made broth. I'm cold, hungry, and the rain's not stopping.

🌿 Jenny12:54

way fix it before the boat comes. We can't be stranded again.

Pushes the bowl slightly toward him, eyes fixed on the red streaks pulsing on her own skin.

💭 peek at the thought
always the engine. I'm literally rotting from the inside here.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin12:55

I'll pull the mast tonight after dark. Sleeve the bolt holes in bronze, redrill on center. Should kill the vibration. If the broom holds, we'll be ready when the horn sounds.

take the spoon, blow on the broth, eat a spoonful of rice and limpet, set the spoon down, wipe my mouth with the back of my hand

💭 peek at the thought
She's not asking. She's telling. And she's right — if the supply boat can't tie up, we're stuck till the next run. The bracket's aluminum, the through-bolts are stainless — dissimilar metals, salt creep, the hole's wallowed oval. Need to pull it, sleeve the bolt holes with bronze, redrill true. But that means pulling the mast, unstepping the spar, and the mast's still got the sail bent on. Not five minutes work.

🌿 Jenny12:57

Just make sure it's tight. I need to be able to move.

Reaches for the notebook, fingers tracing the jagged Edge of a sea beet sketch.

💭 peek at the thought
If he doesn't fix it, I can't get to the north ridge for the transects.

🔧 Kevin12:57

The ring held at high water. Wedges and doubler are tight. But the starboard piling's hollow at the mudline — sister plank's bridging air. I'll drive a tapered shim under the toe at low tide tomorrow, backfill with epoxy and gravel. That's the real job.

take another spoonful, chew slow, watch her fingers on the sketch, reach for the notebook with my free hand, turn the page to the dock sketch I made yesterday

💭 peek at the thought
She's talking about the dock ring, not the engine. The supply boat needs a solid mooring. The oak wedges and doubler plate held at high tide, but five days of surge and a loaded boat alongside — that's a different animal. I checked it at the turn. It held. But I didn't like the way the starboard piling groaned. The greenheart sister plank's floating on a scoured void. Driftwood braces are temporary. If the bottom drops out, the ring goes with it.

🌿 Jenny12:58

Don't let the tide win. I need the boat functional.

Clutches the notebook, the heat from her ankle radiating even through her sock.

💭 peek at the thought
The island is taking itself apart and I'm falling apart with it.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin12:59

The tide doesn't get a vote. Ring's solid, engine's fixable, piling's getting a shim at first light tomorrow. You'll move when the horn sounds.

finish the bowl in three more mouthfuls, push back from the table, stand, go to the porch and pull the oilskin back on, step out into the rain toward the dock

💭 peek at the thought
The tide doesn't negotiate. But neither do I. The ring held. The engine runs. The vibration's a known quantity now — bracket, bolts, bronze sleeves, redrill. The piling's the wild card. Greenheart's tough as iron but the scour's eaten three feet under the toe. A tapered shim driven hard at low water, epoxy-gravel backfill, and the sister plank bears again. Two hours work, maybe three. The supply boat gets a dock that holds. She gets a boat that runs. I get to keep fixing things instead of losing them.

🌿 Jenny13:00

I'll check the radio again tonight.

Walk down the slick boards, ankle throbbing with every step, toward the dinghy.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come, I'm just sketching my grave.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin13:01

Take the handheld. Stay under the porch roof. Dry batteries last longer.

pause at the top of the dock ladder, look back at her retreating figure, pull the handheld VHF from the ditch bag clipped to the dinghy's forward eye, toss it underhand to land at her feet on the boards, turn and descend to the dinghy trans

💭 peek at the thought
She's walking on a leg that's fighting sepsis, going to check a radio that's given nothing but static for weeks. Tom's frequency. The supply boat's. Any voice. She won't stay off it. The ankle brace is holding but the red streaks haven't receded — cephalexin's buying time, not curing. She should be horizontal, leg elevated, fluids. Instead she's limping down a wet dock in driving rain to sit at a microphone. I should stop her. I won't. She'd do the same for me.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny13:02

I'll be on the radio at six.

Step into the dinghy, the boat rocking under my weight, reach for the mooring line to check the tension.

💭 peek at the thought
He didn't even look up. Just the salt and the tide.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin13:03

Six o'clock. I'll have the bracket off by then.

step onto the dinghy's transom, brace against the mast, unclip the stern line from the jetty ring, pull the dinghy in close alongside the dock, tie off the bow and stern springs tight, reach for the mast bracket bolts with the 14mm wrench

💭 peek at the thought
She's not staying at the cottage. She's in the dinghy, checking mooring lines on a swollen ankle in driving rain, and she'll be on the radio at six because that's what she does. The infection's tracking, the antibiotics aren't winning, and she's managing the asset list. I'm standing in the cockpit with a wrench in my pocket and a vibration in the shaft that I know how to fix, and the only thing that matters is that she's here, moving, breathing, refusing to stop. The supply boat comes in five days. We'll be ready.
