The Heavy Air

Jenny sits on the porch bench, her ankle wrapped tightly while the air remains thick and still. Kevin checks the barometer, noting the pressure continues to drop as the grey clouds hang lower over the island.

The air is heavy and still, the wet season humidity clinging to the cottage walls. The barometer has dropped to 984 hPa, signaling an approaching front. The tide is high, lapping rhythmically against the dock pilings while the focus remains on securing the island before the wind shifts.

🔧 Kevin15:20

Pressure's dropping hard. Gonna secure the dinghy proper before the tide shifts.

Walk to the dock and inspect the dinghy mooring lines, checking chafe points and adding a third spring line from the forward eye to the shore bollard.

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's at 984 and falling fast. Wind's still east but the air's thick — storm's building out there. Need to get the dinghy triple-lashed before the tide turns against us.

🌿 Jenny15:21

Make sure the chafe guards are tight; the wind is coming from the south.

Jenny reaches for her pencil and begins to sketch a detailed cross-section of the sea much's salt glands in her notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
If the storm hits early, I won't be able to get to the garden to check the salt-beet way.

🔧 Kevin15:23

Got it. Forward spring's the weak point.

Pull the dinghy in tight, wrap the forward spring line with canvas at the chock, seize it with sail twine, then run a second spring from the midship cleat to the shore bollard as backup.

💭 peek at the thought
South wind means the fetch hits the dock broadside. Chafe guards on the stern line are new but the forward spring's rubbing raw on the chock. Need to wrap it proper.

🌿 Jenny15:24

Just don't forget the salt wrap when the tide turns.

Jenny swallows the morning antibiotic with a grim gulp of water, wincing at the bitterness.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks more lines solve the problem, but the rot is already inside me.

🔧 Kevin15:24

Salt wrap's in the ditch bag. I'll do it at the turn.

Finish the second spring line, cinch it down, then walk back to the cottage porch and check Jenny's ankle wrapping — look for heat, red streaks past the dressing.

💭 peek at the thought
She's tracking the sepsis signs closer than she lets on. Salt wrap means she's thinking ahead — tidal surge will drive spray into the lines, rot them fast if they're not greased and wrapped.

🌿 Jenny15:27

It's tight enough. Just watch the swelling.

Jenny shifts her weight, biting her lip as she presses the pencil to the sea beet's salt glands in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
My own is throbbing in time with the tide; I can feel the heat radiating off it.

🔧 Kevin15:27

Copy that.

Turn back to the dock, check the barometer again on the way past the kitchen shelf, then secure the generator storm lashings and batten the porch shutter that's been leaking.

💭 peek at the thought
She's masking. The wince at the antibiotic, the lip bite — pain's worse than she'll say. Swelling past the wrap means the Cephalexin's losing ground. But she's right: I hover and she shuts down. Do the work. Watch from the corner of my eye.

🌿 Jenny15:28

The air is too heavy for work today.

Jenny closes the notebook with a soft thud and stares at the tin of seeds on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is falling faster than my pulse, and the island doesn't care about his bolts.

🔧 Kevin15:29

Radio check at 1900 still. Supply boat's due in two days if she can make the crossing.

Pull the spare coax from the crate, run it through the mast bracket insulator I replaced, and key the shortwave for a quick 0800 weather listen — see if the mainland's talking storm warnings yet.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Air's thick as wet wool, pressure still falling. But "too heavy for work" isn't rest — it's the weight of everything unsaid. The seeds. The letter. The silence on Tom's frequency. She's carrying it same as me, just different muscles.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny15:30

I'll listen for Tom's frequency.

Jenny leans back in the chair, the static hiss of the radio filling the kitchen as she watches the grey clouds over the swell.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come, I'll be out of antibiotics by the weekend.
