The Turning Tide
The water begins to creep back over the northern shelf, threatening to cover the tide pools as the rain intensifies and the wind picks up from the channel.
The afternoon heat is heavy as the flat sky thickens with clouds. Kevin and Jenny moved the essential gear to the cottage as the tide began to rise, Jenny's ankle throbbing as she navigated the gravel path to avoid the rotting dock planks. A wooden crate from a lost container ship thudded into the surf near the dock.
Kevin! The water's hitting the shelf—we need to move the gear to the cottage now!
Jenny stands up, wincing as her ankle throbs, and grabs the notebook and the seed tin to protect them from the spray.

Moving. Grab the VHF too.
Lift the shortwave radio and battery pack from the dock bench, tuck them under my jacket, and jog up the path toward the cottage with the bucket of salt water still in my other hand.

I've got the radio! Watch your step on the loose planks!
Jenny tucks the notebook tight under her arm and stumbles after Kevin, her breath coming in ragged, feverish gasps.

Leave the radio. I've got it. You take the path, not the planks. Go slow.
Shoulder past her on the dock, take the shortwave and battery pack from her arms, and steer her toward the solid gravel path up the bank with a hand on her elbow.
