Evening of Day 383

The rain begins to patter against the tin roof as Kevin and Jenny sit together inside, watching the barometer and waiting for the supply boat tomorrow.

The air is heavy with the scent of coming rain as the sky thickens to a flat, oppressive grey. The tide is steadily climbing against the dock pilings, lapping at the salt. Inside the cottage, the hum of the shortwave radio is the only唸 against the rising whistle of the wind ducking through the eaves.

🌿 Jenny16:44

The pressure is dropping too fast, Kevin.

Submerge the swollen ankle into the basin of salt water and wince as the heat hits.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come tomorrow, I'll run out of antibiotics and this infection will move up.

🔧 Kevin16:44

Mm. Dropped three millibars since noon. Southwest swell'll be pushing into the channel by morning.

Reach for the radio handset, thumb hovering over the power switch.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. 981 and still falling — this isn't a normal frontal passage. The supply boat won't make it through that channel tomorrow with a southwest swell building against a dropping barometer. We'll be lucky if they try at all.

🌿 Jenny16:47

Check the radio first. Tell them we're still here despite the weather.

Lean back against the stone wall and close my eyes as the throb in my leg pulses in time with my heart.

💭 peek at the thought
If the swell is too high, the boat won't risk the approach, and I'll be stuck with this fever.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin16:47

Right.

Flip the power switch on the shortwave, let the tubes warm, and turn the dial to Channel 16. Press the mic key. "Sorrel Island, Sorrel Island, this is Keeper's Cottage. Position holding. Barometer nine-eight-one and falling.

💭 peek at the thought
She wants contact. Normal. The radio's the only thread to anywhere else. But if the barometer keeps falling like this, the skipper's already deciding whether to risk the crossing — and my voice on 16 won't change his mind.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny16:48

Come on, talk back.

Listen to the static on the speaker, my breath shallow in my chest.

💭 peek at the thought
Please let someone be on the frequency. I need those antibiotics before the fever takes my brain.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin16:48

Nothing yet.

Hold the mic off, listen to the hiss. Wait ten seconds. Key it again. "Sorrel Island, Keeper's Cottage. Standing by on one-six. Over."

💭 peek at the thought
Static. Just static. The skipper's either not listening, not there, or already decided. The swell's going to make that channel ugly by dawn.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny16:50

It's just the wind.

Grip the edge of the table, my knuckles white against the whitewashed wood.

💭 peek at the thought
The static is mocking me. If that boat doesn't show up, I'm going to lose the leg.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin16:50

Wind doesn't drop the glass three millibars in six hours.

Set the mic down. Reach for the notebook on the table, flip to the blank page behind the sea beet sketches. Write: 1842 — 981 hPa, falling 3mb/6hr. SW swell building. Supply boat due 0800. Unlikely.

💭 peek at the thought
Not just wind. The barometer tells the truth. She's scared — not of the storm, but of what it means: another missed boat, another week, another month. The antibiotics are nearly gone. Her ankle's not right. I should've pushed the medevac request harder when the coast guard answered.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny16:52

Then we prepare for the worst-case.

Reach for the seed tin, my fingers trembling over the damp metal.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right. The math doesn't lie, even if my body does.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin16:53

Tin's sealed. Radio's in the dry bag. Ditch bag's clipped to the dinghy eye.

Push back from the table. Walk to the porch door, pull it open a hand's width. Listen to the wind in the gutters, taste salt on the air. Scan the channel — nothing but whitecaps and grey.

💭 peek at the thought
She's thinking ahead. Good. The seed tin's the only thing that matters if the boat doesn't come — and if we have to leave in the dinghy, it's the only thing we take. The rest is replaceable. She isn't.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny16:54

Check the way again.

Pull the tin to my lap, pressing my thumb over the lid where my grandmother's name is scratched.

💭 peek at the thought
If the swell gets that bad, they'll stay off the coast. I'm not ready for these seeds to rot in the tin.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin16:55

Already did. They'll answer if they're out there.

Step back inside, pull the door shut against the gust. Walk to the radio shelf, pick up the mic. Key it. "Sorrel Island, Keeper's Cottage. Still here. Barometer nine-eight-zero. Standing by one-six. Out." Set the mic down.

💭 peek at the thought
She means the radio. Wants me to call again. Won't change anything — the skipper's either coming or he isn't, and the barometer says he isn't. But she needs to hear me try.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny16:57

The static is getting louder.

Close my eyes and let the throb in my ankle sink into the heat of the water.

💭 peek at the thought
Silence is the loudest thing on this island.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin16:57

It's the front. Wind's backing southwest.

Cross to the stove. Lift the lid on the pot, spoon a bowl of the limpet broth. Set it on the table in front of her with a spoon.

💭 peek at the thought
She's hearing the front arrive. The static's not the radio — it's the wind in the aerial, the rain on the roof, the swell hitting the cliffs. She's tired. Feverish. The antibiotics should've kicked by now. If the infection's tracking up the leg, we're past what I can handle here.
