NIGHT: The arrival of the storm

The first heavy drops of rain hit the corrugated roof, followed by a sudden gust of wind that rattles the cottage door in its frame.

Kevin prepares the cottage for the coming storm as the pressure drops, checking the seals on the windows. Jenny rests inside, her ankle throbbing in the humidity while they wait for the supply boat.

🌿 Jenny16:59

Kevin! Check the latch!

Stands up slowly, wincing as her ankle throbs, and moves to pull the door

💭 peek at the thought
The storm is finally breaking; if the boat doesn't come tomorrow, I'm stuck with this fever alone.

Got it.

Step to the door, shoulder it shut hard, throw the bolt and test the latch with a pull.

💭 peek at the thought
Door's warped from the salt and swell — latch catches if you shoulder it right. She shouldn't be on that ankle.

🌿 Jenny17:01

The barometer is dropping too fast. It's going to be a mess.

Limps to the kitchen table, leaning heavily on the wood to catch her breath.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the boat arriving, he doesn't even see I'm shaking.

🔧 Kevin17:01

Aye. Not making the crossing tomorrow.

Move to the radio shelf, key the shortwave to the supply boat channel, depress the mic. "Sorrel Island to mainland supply. Position holding. Barometer 980 falling. Request ETA confirmation. Over."

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. 980 and falling fast. Supply boat won't make it through that swell. Need to secure the dinghy, check the dock lines again, batten the generator.

🌿 Jenny17:02

Tell them we need antibiotics. And salt.

Slumps into the chair, burying her face in her hot hands as the fever makes her dizzy.

💭 peek at the thought
If that boat doesn't come, I run out of salt long before the infection clears.

🔧 Kevin17:03

Sorrel Island to mainland supply. Medical request: antibiotics — doxycycline and metronidazole — and salt. Patient with infected ankle wound, fever rising. Over.

Set the mic down, cross to the stove, fill the kettle from the tank, set it to heat for a cool compress once boiled.

💭 peek at the thought
Antibiotics are gone — finished the course on her ankle. Salt we have from the tide pools if the stove holds. She's burning up. Need to get the radio message out, then cool her down, get fluids in her.

🌿 Jenny17:04

I'm so cold, Kevin.

Closes her eyes, shivering despite the heat of the room.

💭 peek at the thought
Doxycycline... I need that before I can't even walk to the garden.

🔧 Kevin17:05

I've got you.

Grab the wool blanket from the porch hook, shake it out, wrap it around her shoulders and tuck it close, then return to the kettle.

💭 peek at the thought
Chills with fever — rigors. Body's fighting hard. Kettle'll take a minute. Wool blanket on the porch. Get her wrapped now.
