The First Squall

The first heavy drops of rain hit the corrugated tin roof as the wind begins to lash the garden-cloth.

Kevin finished the shackle housing repair by perfectly aligning the collar clamp to the frame. Jenny checked the heirloom seed tin for signs of moisture, finding the packets dry despite the thickening clouds. Inside, a rat breached the pantry to forage through the stored food.

Going to finish the collar. Then we're moving inside.

Tighten the last bolts on the collar clamp at the shackle housing, then secure tools and head for the cottage porch.

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here. Need to finish the shackle housing before the dock goes under, then get Jenny and the radio gear inside.

way the tin with you. The pressure is dropping too fast.

Pick up the rusted seed tin from the porch and carry it to the kitchen table, shielding it from the spray.

💭 peek at the thought
If the humidity stays this high, the heirloom seeds will mold before they ever** the soil.

🔧 Kevin03:36

Right behind you. Radio next — aerial's already gone but the set's dry.

Grab the heavy wrench and crowbar from the dock, jog up the path to the porch, and unbolt the shortwave from its shelf bracket to carry it inside.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — 981 to wherever it's gone in minutes. Tin first, radio second, her ankle third. My shoulder's screaming from the wrench work but the collar's holding.

🌿 Jenny03:37

Jenny — way on the kitchen chair and unwrap the ankle gauze, applying fresh ointment to the throbbing infection.

💭 peek at the thought
I need to get these seeds near the wood stove before the moisture gets into the tin.취SAY: Put the radio by the stove. I'm dressing this own before it swells.

🔧 Kevin03:38

Red line holding at the mark?

Set the radio on the kitchen table away from the tin, pull the first aid kit from the shelf, and sit opposite her to help re-wrap the gauze.

💭 peek at the thought
Ankle looks angry but the red lines haven't crossed the noon pen mark. That's the line. She's doing it one-handed, jaw tight. Good sign.

🌿 Jenny03:39

It's tight enough. Just hold the end of the tape.

watch his hands as he wraps the gauze, wincing when the fabric brushes the way edge.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's just a scratch, but the heat isradi off the skin.

🔧 Kevin03:40

Done.

Tear the tape with my teeth, press the end down smooth, and set the roll back in the first aid kit.

💭 peek at the thought
She's tougher than me. Always has been. Tape holds, gauze clean, no fresh pus. The doxy's working.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny03:41

Thanks. Check the moisture in the tin for me.

Open grandmother's seed tin and inspect the heirloom packets for any sign of damp.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come in five days, I'll have to use the radio again.

🔧 Kevin03:42

On it.

Pick up the rusted seed tin marked 'E', pry the lid, and run a fingertip along the inner rim and packet edges to test for moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
Tin's been drying on the porch — should be fine, but she's thorough. That's why the seeds are still viable.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny03:43

Be careful. If they get damp, the whole batch is gone.

lean back against the chair, watching him work while my ankle pulses in time with the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
The air is so heavy, it's like breathing through a wet cloth.
