The Loomening Rain

Kevin struggles to pull the heavy garden tarp over the tomato rows as the wind picks up. Jenny sits on the low stone of the garden wall, her ankle elevated on a crate, watching the first heavy drops hit the dust.

Kevin worked at the dock to fabricate a collar clamp for the shackle housing using a winch plate. Jenny stayed in the garden, tending to her ankle and sketching sea beet morphology in her notebook. The sky thickens as the pressure begins a slow rise.

🌿 Jenny03:11

Kevin, use the stones for weight! The wind is shifting to the north!

Jenny reaches into her pocket for a charcoal pencil and begins to sketch the way the clouds are bruising over the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
If that way catches the wind, the whole frame goes down. He's holding it too high.

🔧 Kevin03:13

Stones it is. Hand me the big flat ones from the wall base.

walk to the garden wall, pick up two large flat stones, carry them to the tarp's windward corners, set them on the hem to anchor it

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the stones — wind from the north'll get under the leading edge if I don't weight it proper. And she's sketching the weather instead of complaining about the ankle. That's something.

🌿 Jenny03:13

Get the stakes from the shed too, the flat ones won't hold!

Jenny stands up with a wince, clutching her throbbing ankle, and moves toward the cottage to grab the garden stakes.

💭 peek at the thought
He needs more than just two. The wind is going to lift the corners anyway.

🔧 Kevin03:14

I'll get the stakes. You sit. Ankle up.

walk to the garden shed, grab the bundle of wooden stakes, carry them back to the garden, drive stakes through tarp grommets at intervals along the windward edge with the mallet

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving on that ankle when she shouldn't be. Stakes are in the shed — I'll get them. She needs to sit.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny03:15

Use the twine too, Kevin! The wind will rip the waymets!

Jenny reaches the cottage door, leaning heavily against the frame as she reaches for the bundle of stakes on the workbench.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast; the ground is too soft for those stakes to hold.

🔧 Kevin03:16

Twine's inside. I'll get it. You sit.

walk into the cottage, grab the ball of twine from the shelf by the radio, walk back to the garden, tie off tarp corners and midpoints to the stakes with tight clove hitches

💭 peek at the thought
She's at the workbench grabbing stakes I already went for. Ankle's bad enough she's leaning on the doorframe. Twine's in the cottage on the shelf by the radio. I'll get it. She needs to get off that foot.

🌿 Jenny03:17

Check the tension! The salt wind will snap them right!

Jenny hands the stakes to Kevin, her breath hitching as she shifts her weight off the infected ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's finally using the twine, but the pressure is dropping too fast for those grommets.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin03:18

Tension's good. Inside now.

cinch the last twine tie-off tight, toss mallet toward shed doorway, turn and walk to Jenny, slide an arm under her shoulder to take her weight, steer her back toward the cottage door

💭 peek at the thought
She handed me stakes I already fetched. She's not tracking — pain or fever or both. Tension on the twine matters but she matters more. Get the tarp done fast, get her back inside.

🌿 Jenny03:19

Check the tin... I need to check the moisture levels.

Jenny lets herself lean into him, her eyes fixed on the darkening garden as they cross the threshold.

💭 peek at the thought
If the tarp holds, the seeds might survive. If not, everything is lost.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin03:20

I'll check the tin. You sit. Ankle up on the crate.

guide her to the chair by the window, lift her leg onto the crate, pull the blanket over her, walk to the shelf and take down the heirloom seed tin, pop the lid, run a finger through the packets to feel for damp

💭 peek at the thought
The seed tin. She's watching the garden go dark and thinking about moisture levels. Priorities are skewed but that's the infection talking. Get her settled, then check the tin myself.
