Evening of Day 419
Kevin and Jenny meet in the kitchen as the first heavy drops of rain fall. The smell of damp earth rises as the sound of scratching continues from the pantry.
Kevin and Jenny secured the heirloom seed tin on the top pantry shelf and wedged a cast iron skillet against a rodent entry gap at the floor-wall junction. Kevin confirmed fresh rat sign on pepper and lettuce seed packets, which were bagged for burning, while the tin's gasket seal held intact.
Tank's at three-ninety-one. Took the last strip for soil. Got five left in the new kit.
walk to the back wall and check the rain tank gauge, then pull the tin mug from the shelf and set it under the tap

Check the pantry again. I heard something near the flour sacks.
Jenny winces as she shifts her weight onto her good leg, then reaches for her notebook to mark the pressure drop.

Flour's gone. Threw it out yesterday. But I'll check the shelves.
cross the kitchen to the pantry door, pull it open, and shine the LED headlamp beam along the shelves

Watch out for the packets. They can chew through the paper.
Jenny limps to the table and pulls the seed tin close to her, holding it tight to her chest.

Tin's metal. They can't chew metal.
sweep the headlamp beam across the upper shelves — tinned corned beef, coffee jar, the new water test kit — then drop to the lower where the seed packets were drying

Just look for holes. Small tooth marks or droppings.
Jenny watches him from the kitchen table, her fingers tapping nervously against the lid of the tin.

Fresh sign. Pepper and lettuce packets hit. Tin's clean. Gap at the back corner — they're coming up from under the floor.
pull the compromised pepper and lettuce packets out, bag them in newspaper, and set them by the door for burning

Move the tin to the top shelf. Away from the damp.
Jenny stands up with a sharp intake of breath, her ankle throbbing, and grabs the seed tin to move it to the way.

Sit. I'll move it.
step forward, take the seed tin from her hands, and lift it to the top shelf above the corned beef tins

Make sure the lid is tight.
Jenny sinks back into the chair, clutching her swollen ankle as she watches the dark corner of the pantry.

Lid's tight. Gasket holding. I'll plug the run tomorrow.
press the lid down firmly, run a finger around the seal, then turn back to the pantry floor and crouch to examine the gap where the wall meets the boards

Use something heavy to block that gap. For now.
Jenny reaches for her notebook, her hand shaking slightly as she begins to sketch the falling barometric pressure.

Skillet on the stove. I'll wedge it.
walk to the stove, lift the cast iron skillet by the handle, carry it to the pantry, and wedge it hard against the gap at the base of the wall

Keep it there until the boat comes.
Jenny watches the way settle, her eyes fixed on the dark space under the floorboards.
