← Day 420

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the garden

Midday Heat and Humidity

Kevin is at the dock while Jenny is in the garden.

The warm rain continues to fall steadily, slicking the wood of the dock. The tide is high, lapping hungrily against the pilings where Kevin has just finished wedging the epoxy and oak. The barometer continues its rapid drop to 979 hPa, signaling a significant shift in weather despite the humid heat.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You feel the damp wood of the south piling, noting how the moisture is accelerating the decay.

🔧 Kevin04:24

Kevin — crouch at the south piling, press the awl into the timber at three heights — waterline, mid, top — feeling for the give. Note each depth in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
South piling's worse than I thought — rot's eating up from the waterline, not down. Greenheart shim's holding the toe but the mass above is going soft. Next big swell takes the ring with it.

🔧 Kevin04:28

Kevin — walk back to the workshop, grab the oak wedges, mallet, and the nearly empty epoxy tub. Return to the south piling at low water slack.

💭 peek at the thought
Rot's twelve inches deep at the waterline, eight at mid, barely sound at the top. Greenheart sister plank's carrying the load but it's floating on void — the scour underneath ate more than I calculated. Need to drive oak wedges into that void before the next tide, then pour epoxy grout. If the supply boat comes in four days, the dock has to take her lines.

🔧 Kevin04:32

Kevin — drive four oak wedges into the scour void under the greenheart sister plank, tapping each until they bite. Mix the last of the epoxy with sawdust to a slurry, pour it into the gaps around the wedges and the bolt holes.

💭 peek at the thought
Low water's the only window. Wedges first to fill the scour void and lock the sister plank tight, then what's left of the epoxy to seal it. After that — nothing. Tub's bone dry after this. Hope the ring holds on bolts and prayer.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the garden

You pull the shade cloth to ensure the tomatoes are protected from the stifling midday heat.

🌿 Jenny04:23

Just one more row, Jenny.

wipe sweat from my brow with the back of a hand and lean heavily against the garden wall.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is screaming with every movement; if this infection doesn't break soon, I'll never see these seeds sprout.

🌿 Jenny04:27

Jenny — limp back toward the cottage, favoring my ankle to support the weight.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is picking up again, and the humidity is getting into everything. I need to check that tin.

🌿 Jenny04:31

Jenny — sit at the kitchen table and open the seed tin to check for dampness.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast. If the boat doesn't come, I'm in serious trouble.
