The Calm Before the Squall

The rain tapers to a drizzle as the tide reaches its low, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools.

Kevin heads to the dock as the tide falls to inspect the moorings, but struggles with a stubborn bolt. Jenny stays at the cottage to manage her ankle and sort the salvaged tinned beans while the air pressure continues to drop slowly.

(A sharp intake of breath as the bandage slips)

Grabs a fresh roll of gauze and tries to wrap it tighter over the red, swollen skin, gritting teeth against the pain.

💭 peek at the thought
If this infection hits the bone, I won't even be able to walk to the garden, let alone map the island.

Let me.

Walk over to her, kneel, take the gauze roll from her hand.

💭 peek at the thought
She's doing it one-handed again. The angle's wrong and she's pulling the wrap too tight on the outside — cuts circulation. Should help.

I have it. My hands are just... tired.

Pulls her leg back slightly, watching his hands with a skeptical frown.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he can fix this just like he fixed the radio.

🔧 Kevin08:35

Hold the gauze over the heel, not the front. Let it sit a beat, then roll.

Take the gauze, position it over the heel, roll loosely to cover, and leave the front of the leg uncovered for blood flow.

💭 peek at the thought
The wrap needs to be around the heel, not the front; that’ll keep circulation.
