The Approaching Squall

Kevin and Jenny are inside as the wind howls through the eaves. The tide is beginning to turn, and the rain is showing no sign of stopping.

Kevin and Jenny ate a meal of limpets and broth while securing the cottage against the building squall. They reinforced the seed tin with self-amalgamating tape to protect the heirloom seeds from humidity.

🌿 Jenny11:57

Check the latch on the kitchen window, Kevin. The wind is catching.

move the pot of boiling limpets off the stove and wrap my own tighter in a clean, dry cloth.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast. If the roof leaks, I won't even be able to reach the north ridge tomorrow.

🔧 Kevin11:57

On it.

cross to the kitchen window, test the latch, force it home with the heel of my hand if it sticks, then check the porch door seal while I'm up

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's got teeth today. Kitchen window latch has been sticky since the last front — should've greased it when I had the chance. Pot's off the stove, good. She's moving on her own, ankle's holding.

🌿 Jenny11:59

I heard you. Make sure it's tight.

sit heavily on the kitchen chair, wincing as the pressure throbs in my ankle, and watch the rain lashes the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
If that window gets wet, the sketches are ruined. I can't lose the data.

🔧 Kevin11:59

Latched. Porch door's tight enough but the weatherstrip's peeling on the hinge side. I'll pin it when the gusts drop.

pull the kitchen chair out opposite her, sit, and let the silence stretch while the rain hammers the roof

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the weather like she's reading a gauge. Ankle's throbbing bad — can see it in the jaw set. Latch caught on the second try. Porch door seal's holding but the bottom weatherstrip's lifting on the hinge side.

🌿 Jenny12:01

Don't wait. The wind is getting worse.

reach for the seed tin on the table, tracing the cold metal with my thumb, checking if the seeds are still dry inside.

💭 peek at the thought
He's just sitting there while the world is falling apart and my leg is pulsing like a heart.

🔧 Kevin12:02

The lid’s warped a bit, but the seeds are still dry.

squeeze the seed tin, pry the warped lid with a flathead screwdriver, then reseal with a rubber band and a strip of cotton from the kitchen table. Check for leaks by soaking a small amount of water in the tin; if it stays dry, move on.

💭 peek at the thought
The lid’s warped a bit, but the seeds are still dry. I’ll get it sealed before the wind takes off.

🌿 Jenny12:04

Use the tape. We can't risk the humidity.

grab the roll of self-amalgamating tape and wrap it tightly around the seam of the tin.

💭 peek at the thought
If the lid is warped, the moisture will get in. I can't let grandmother's seeds rot before they even start.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin12:04

Good call.

watch her finish the wrap, then pick up the tin and test the seal by pressing the lid — no give, no hiss of air. Set it back on the table gently.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Humidity's already wrecked one batch. Tape's the better seal anyway — rubber band'll rot. Her hands are steady on the tape, better than mine would be right now.

🌿 Jenny12:05

We need to eat those limpets before the water gets too cold.

lean back in the chair, rubbing the swollen skin of my ankle, and watch the barometer needle drop further.

💭 peek at the thought
It's sealed for now, but the wind is screaming and the barometer is still falling.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin12:05

Broth's ready. Tin mugs on the shelf.

rise, grab the pot with a cloth, pour two mugs full — limpets and broth — set one in front of her, take the other to the chair opposite, blow steam off the surface

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the barometer like it's a patient. 987 and falling. Limpets are done — broth's dark and rich. Should eat now, stove's still warm. My gut's been hollow since dawn.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:07

It smells decent. Thank you.

lift the mug, feeling the warmth seep into my palms, and take a slow sip of the broth.

💭 peek at the thought
The salt is good, but the heat in my bone is winning. I'm tired of being hungry.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin12:07

Eat the meat too. Iron'll help the blood.

pick a limpet from my mug with the small fork, pull the foot free, chew slow, let the warmth spread through my chest

💭 peek at the thought
Salt and iron and something sweet from the limpets. Good. She's eating. That's what matters. The wind shrieks around the eaves — sounds like a bearing running dry. Barometer's still dropping. Radio check at 2200. Tenth call. Need to log the container ship position if Tom doesn't answer.
