Midday meal and radio watch

Kevin and Jenny sit at the kitchen table eating boiled limpets with broth. The barometer reads 989 hPa and falling. Outside, the air is unnaturally still. The supply boat is due in six days. Kevin has the handheld VHF clipped to his belt; the shortwave sits ready for the 1400 call to Tom.

The rain has turned into a heavy western front, lashing the cottage and the dock. The pressure is dropping steadily to 989 hPa, signaling a worsening storm. The tide is currently low, leaving the tide pools slick and exposed under the wind.

🌿 Jenny11:47

The wind is turning west again. Check the radio antenna before the rain hits.

Jenny swallows a piece of limpet and winces as she shifts weight on her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if that boat doesn't come in six days, I'll be out of antibiotics before the infection clears.

🔧 Kevin11:47

Antenna's next. Finish your broth first — salt'll help the ankle.

Push back from table, collect the empty tin mugs, carry them to the sink. Wipe hands on thigh. Walk to the porch door, unclip handheld VHF from belt, set it on the shelf beside the shortwave. Step out onto the porch, eyes up the mast.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. West wind with this pressure drop means the front's close. Antenna insulator held last blow but the coax entry's the weak point. She's favoring the left ankle still — metro's working but the tendon's tight. Six days to supply boat. Need the radio solid.

🌿 Jenny11:49

I'm finishing.

Jenny sips the last of the broth and stares at the darkening clouds on the horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks salt is a miracle cure, but I need that doxycycline to work and my stomach isn't so swollen.

🔧 Kevin11:49

Good. I'll check the coax seal at the mast base, then the insulator up top. You secure the tomato stakes — they'll snap first.

Pull the porch door shut behind me. Walk to the radio mast at the garden's edge. Uncoil the spare coax from the hook. Start climbing the rungs welded to the pole, hand over hand, the spare coax looped over one shoulder.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the same line I am. West-southwest, purple-black under the cloud base. Wind'll be on us within the hour. Barometer's dropped three millibars since breakfast. She knows what it means — the garden tarp, the dinghy lines, the generator lashings. We've done this dance before. Her ankle won't let her do the climbing. That's me.

🌿 Jenny11:51

I'll check them once the radius is clear.

Jenny sets the mug down on the table and rubs her throbbing ankle, watching him climb.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always worried about the stakes while I'm worried about the rot in my leg.

🔧 Kevin11:51

(nothing — too high to shout down, radio's inside)

Reach the masthead bracket. Hook one leg through the rung. Pull the self-amalgamating tape roll from my pocket. Inspect the porcelain insulator where the aerial wire passes through — check for cracks, water ingress, tape adhesion.

💭 peek at the thought
Radius clear means she's waiting for me to get off the mast before she limps out there. Smart. The tomato stakes are bamboo, driven shallow — they'll lever out in a gust. She knows every plant in that bed. I'm fifteen feet up, the mast swaying a fraction in the breath of wind coming up. Coax entry at the base looked clean. The insulator at the top is the spare porcelain, taped and sealed. Need to verify the tape hasn't lifted.

🌿 Jenny11:53

Watch the wind speed.

way stands up slowly, wincing as the weight hits her swollen ankle, and moves to the window.

💭 peek at the thought
If this seal leaks, the whole system goes down and I'm truly alone out here.

🔧 Kevin11:53

Insulator's clean. Tape holding. Checking the solder joint now.

Pull the aerial wire taut with one hand. Examine the solder joint at the feed connection — look for green corrosion, cracked solder, moisture under the heat shrink.

💭 peek at the thought
She's at the kitchen window watching me. The mast flexes under my weight — spruce, thirty feet, solid at the step. Wind's picking up at altitude, cold on my face. The insulator looks clean. Tape's holding, no lift at the edges. Porcelain's intact. Good. But the aerial wire itself — the solder joint where it meets the feed line — that's the real weak point. Salt gets in there. Last storm I had to re-solder it hanging one-handed. Today the iron's in the cottage.

🌿 Jenny11:55

Hurry up, the rain's starting.

Jenny traces the grain of the table, watching the first heavy drops hit the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the wires, but the sky is turning a bruised purple.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin11:55

Joint's corroded. Coming down for the iron.

Unhook leg from rung. Descend the mast rungs fast, boots clanging on steel. Drop to the grass. Sprint for the cottage porch door, yank it open, grab the soldering iron from the shelf above the workbench.

💭 peek at the thought
First fat drops hitting the porch roof. The solder joint shows green bloom — salt corrosion creeping under the heat shrink. Not bad yet, but another gale and it'll fail. Need to clean and re-seal. Iron's inside. Can't do it hanging here one-handed in the rain. Have to come down, get the iron, go back up. She's right — hurry.
