The Calming Before the Pressure

The flat sky continues to darken as the wind dies down. The tide is not to turn for several hours, and the barometer is falling.

Kevin and Jenny shared limpet broth at the cottage while the barometer fell. Kevin checked the radio mast and found it secure, then moved Jenny's damp sea beet notebook to the drier bedroom to press under the chart weight. Jenny examined her sketches and noted denser salt glands in lower sea beet leaves.

It's too quiet. The wind has completely died.

Limp to the stove and pour a bowl of the warm limpet broth.

💭 peek at the thought
The silence before a storm is the worst part. I can feel the pressure drop in my sinuses, and my ankle is throbbing in time with my heart. I need to eat something before I lose the strength to stand.

🔧 Kevin11:34

Aye. Barometer's down another point since dawn. Front's building slow. Eat — we'll need it.

ladle a second bowl of limpet broth, hand it to her, then step onto the porch to scan the radio mast, shrouds, and the new porcelain insulator for any sign of movement or stress

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The stillness before a storm always feels wrong — like the island's holding its breath. Barometer at 991 and falling, tide still high, wind gone flat. This is the window before the front hits. Need to check the dock mooring ring and pilings at low tide (0630), but that's hours off. Right now: secure what can move, check the radio aerial one more time, and get calories in both of us.

🌿 Jenny11:38

Thanks.

Take the bowl and eat the limpets slowly, watching him through the porch door.

💭 peek at the thought
He's hovering. I appreciate the broth, but the way he's monitoring the mast—and me—feels like he's waiting for something to break. I just want to be able to walk without thinking about the pus.

Mast's clean. Insulator seated. Coax run good.

turn back into the kitchen, pull out the chair opposite her, sit, and start on my own bowl — slow, deliberate, letting the warmth spread through cold fingers

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching me watch the mast. Good — means she's tracking the same things. The broth's hot, salt and iron, fuel for what's coming. Mast looks sound from here: insulator seated, self-amalgamating tape holding, coax run clean to the garden frame ground. Shrouds taut. No chafe visible. But the wind'll shift northeast before midnight if the barometer keeps dropping, and that'll test the starboard stay first. Mental note: check the turnbuckles at low tide alongside the dock.

🌿 Jenny11:41

The sea beet sketches are still on the table. I need to get the salt out of the paper before the humidity ruins the ink.

Set the empty bowl in the sink and carefully shift my weight to look at the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so methodical. It's the only thing we still have in common—the checklists, the maintenance, the refusal to admit we're terrified of the silence between us. My ankle feels tight under the wrap.

🔧 Kevin11:41

I'll move it to the bedroom. Drier in there, less draft. Press the pages under the chart weight.

gather the damp notebook pages gently, carry them into the bedroom, lay them flat on the bunk, set the brass chart weight on top, then return to the kitchen and rinse both bowls

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving careful on the ankle — good, means she's protecting it without me saying. The sketches matter to her; salt crystals will eat the paper and bleed the ink if the humidity climbs like it will. Notebook's been de-salting on the table since yesterday, but the storm air's already thick. Best move it somewhere drier, press the pages flat. I can do that while she rests the leg.

Grab my magnifying glass and sit on the edge of the bed with the notebook. </think>THOUGHT: He's thinking like a mariner, pressing maps flat against the bulkhead.

💭 peek at the thought
Dry room. Chart weight. He's thinking like a mariner, pressing maps flat against the bulkhead. I need to finish documenting the salt glands before the storm hits, but my hands won't stop shaking.
