The Rising Humidity
Jenny sits on the porch chair wrapping her ankle while the clouds muffle the sun. Kevin checks the barometer, noting the needle continues its slow descent as the pressure drops. The air is still and smells of salt and coming rain.
Kevin returns from the garden to find the sea beet trays secured under the tarp, the oak stakes holding firm against the rising wind. He checks the dock mooring ring as planned, finding the tension correct even though the tide is beginning to lap at the lower-side pilings. Jenny waits by the cottage wall, clutching her ankle to manage the throbbing pain, and they both watch the sky darken further over the north ridge as the barometric pressure continues to drop.
The way is falling. We need to secure the sea beet trays before the wind shifts.
Tighten the saline wrap on my ankle and stand up, limping toward the garden.

Make sure the stakes are deep. My ankle is throbbing with every step.
Lean against the whitewashed stone wall and watch the sky darken.

Stakes are deep. Sit tight. I'll check the dock ring on the way back.
drive the last oak stake home with the mallet, pull the tarp taut, tie off to the garden wall deadman, then walk back toward the dock
