The Approaching Front

The flat sky has turned a heavy, bruised purple, and the wind has picked up from the north. The tide is now high, and the first heavy drops of rain begin to batter the roof.

Heavy rain lashes in from the west, signaling the arrival of the storm. The barometric pressure continues to drop as the wind picks up, forcing Kevin and Jenny to stay inside the cottage to keep dry and protect the equipment.

Jenny — winces and shifts weight, wrapping the saline cloth tighter around the swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if this storm hits as hard as it looks, the seedlings will be gone.

Stay off it. I'll check the dock.

Walk to the dock and inspect the mooring ring mortise, oak wedges, and piling alignment under the high tide surge.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's at 980 and falling fast. Wind backing north means the surge will hit the dock broadside. Need to check the mooring ring wedges are still holding before the tide peaks fully — oak's compressed but if the pilings shift under this pressure, the ring'll work loose again.

Be careful with the swell!

Leans back against the whitewashed wall, clutching the edge of the seed tin to her chest.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to be the protector again. I can't even walk to the porch door without seeing stars.

Wedges are holding. Back in a minute.

Reach the dock, crouch at the mooring ring, and test each oak wedge with the mallet — tap to check for movement or hollow sound. Inspect the steel doubler plate bolts for any sign of stretch.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right to warn me — the swell's already climbing the pilings, and the footing's slick with spray. But the ring held last check, and the wedges are vertical grain oak. They'll compress before they fail. Just need to confirm the mortise hasn't opened under the lateral load.

🌿 Jenny12:41

Hurry back, Kevin!

Drags herself toward the door, using the wall for support to pull the seed packets and the tin inside the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't just sit here while the rain starts. If the water gets into the seed packets now, they're finished.

🔧 Kevin12:42

Ring's solid. North piling's got a gap at the shim — scour's worse. Need to drive a deeper wedge when the tide drops.

Walk back to the cottage, stepping careful on the wet planks.

💭 peek at the thought
All four wedges tap solid — no hollow ring, no give. The doubler plate bolts are snug, washers flat. The ring's fast. But the north piling... the greenheart shim I drove at low tide is showing a hairline gap at the toe. Scour's eaten under it deeper than I thought. Next big surge could lever the pile.

🌿 Jenny12:43

Leave the boots on the porch. Don't track the mud in.

Gently sets the seed tin on the kitchen table and sinks into the wooden chair, letting out a long, shaky breath.

💭 peek at the thought
Of course it's scouring. The ocean always takes more than it gives.
