The Approaching Rain

The sky turns a bruised purple as the first heavy drops hit the tin roof. Kevin and Jenny are in the kitchen, the smell of damp earth and wood smoke filling the room.

Kevin spent the afternoon securing the generator with the heavy-duty tarp as clouds thickened. Jenny stayed in the cottage to manage her ankle wound, checking for signs of spreading infection while the wind picked up.

🌿 Jenny14:47

Check the window latch, Kevin. The wind is picking up.

Limps to the table to gather the sea beet sketches and the seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is going to ruin the morphology sketches if I don't get them under the bed.

🔧 Kevin14:49

On it. You get the sketches dry.

Walk to the porch and check the door latch, then secure it with the timber batten.

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's moving faster than the barometer said. Need the porch door battened and the generator lashed before the gusts hit thirty knots.

🌿 Jenny14:49

I'm moving them to the bedroom, just in case.

Tucks the sea beet sketches into the waterproof binder and slides them under the mattress.

💭 peek at the thought
If the water gets into the notebook, the whole year of work is gone.

🔧 Kevin14:51

Bedroom it is. I'll tie down the tarp over the generator while you're at it.

Pull the spare tarp from the porch roll, unfold it over the generator, and lash it down with the ratchet straps from the storm lashings kit.

💭 peek at the thought
Good call. If the roof leaks, the bedroom stays drier than the kitchen.

🌿 Jenny14:55

Be careful out there on the porch. I'm just going to check the dressing.

Sits on the bed and begins unwrapping the ankle bandage to check for heat or pus.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is getting louder. If the generator fails now, I'm sitting in the dark.

🔧 Kevin14:55

Yell if it's hot or weeping. I've got the doxycycline and metronidazole in the kit if we need to adjust.

Step onto the porch, crouch low against the rail, and cinch the tarp's corner grommets to the generator frame with the ratchet straps, pulling each tight before moving to the next.

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's gusting now. Porch boards are slick. Keep three points of contact and don't rush the knots.

🌿 Jenny14:57

It's just red for now, but the throbbing.

way peels back the damp gauze, flinching as it sticks to the wound.

💭 peek at the thought
The skin is tight and hot. If it spreads, I won't be able to walk to the ridge.

🔧 Kevin14:57

Keep it elevated. I'll bring the pill mug and the broth when I'm done here.

Finish the last ratchet strap on the generator tarp, tug each corner to confirm they're drum-tight, then step back inside and set the kettle on the stove to heat water for the antibiotic mug.

💭 peek at the thought
Throbbing means pressure. Could be the abscess reforming or just the storm dropping the pressure further. Either way, she needs the leg up and the next dose soon.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny14:59

Jenny — props her leg on a stack of pillows and watches the swelling around the ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat is radiating off the skin. I need the seeds in that tin to survive.そもそもSAY: Don't take too long. The pressure is dropping.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin14:59

Broth's coming. Elevate it on two pillows if one isn't enough—don't want it dependent.

Pour hot water from the kettle into a tin mug, add one doxycycline tablet, stir until dissolved, then carry the mug and a second mug of limpet broth to the bedroom and set them on the nightstand beside Jenny.

💭 peek at the thought
Swelling's up but no new heat or red streaks. Metronidazole's holding the infection; we just need to manage the fluid and keep her off it until the barometer steadies.
