The Calm Before the Shift

Kevin and Jenny gather in the cottage as the first heavy gusts whistle through the spruce trees. The supply boat is still nine days away.

Kevin drilled and tapped the shutter hinge plate for a 6mm machine screw with nyloc nut and fender washer, securing the loose bolt. Jenny checked her ankle infection, finding heat contained at the ankle bone with no spreading redness, then moved the heirloom seed tin to the highest kitchen shelf.

The air is getting heavy. We need to check the roof again.

Move the sea beet morphology sketches closer to the wood stove and peel back the bandage on my ankle to check for heat.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping again; that sky is going to break. If I don't get these sketches dry, the salt will warp the paper.

Roof held through the last three. Tiles are sound. But the porch shutter on the hinge side — bottom bolt's working loose. I'll check it while you look at the ankle.

walk to the porch and inspect the bottom shutter bolt, tightening with the heavy wrench if needed

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's building faster than the barometer said. She's checking the ankle — smart — but the roof's the real worry if the gusts hit forty knots. I've seen worse take tiles off this cottage.

way make sure you don't strips the threads; the wind is catching it hard.

Press a palm against the skin around the infection to check for heat and watch for spreading redness.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always fixing the bolts while the world falls apart outside. My ankle is throbbing in time with the wind.

🔧 Kevin18:19

Threads are gone in the hinge plate. Won't hold torque. I'll drill and tap for a 6mm machine screw with a nyloc — holds better in soft wood. You need the wrench?

retrieve the drill bit set and 6mm tap from the workshop, return to porch to drill out the stripped hinge hole

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the threads are chewed in that hinge. Bolt's been moving for weeks. Need a nyloc or a washer, not just torque.

🌿 Jenny18:21

just use the nyloc. The wood is soft from the salt anyway.

Move the heirloom seed tin to the highest shelf in the kitchen, away from the damp floor.

💭 peek at the thought
If he strips the wood, the whole shutter will come off in the next gale. My ankle feels like it's on fire.

🔧 Kevin18:21

Fender washer under the nyloc. Spreads the bite. Done in five.

grab a fender washer and nyloc nut from the tool bag, drill the clearance hole through the hinge plate, bolt it up tight with the nyloc

💭 peek at the thought
She knows the wood. Salt's eaten the fibers — tapping's a waste of time. Nyloc with a fender washer spreads the load. Faster too.

🌿 Jenny18:23

thanks. I'm going to check the swelling again.

way on the kitchen chair and lift the ankle onto the table to check for heat and spreading redness.

💭 peek at the thought
At least one thing is holding. The wind is getting louder, and my leg is screaming louder.

🔧 Kevin18:23

Metronidazole's five tablets left. One every twelve hours. Poultice on the shelf if the heat spreads past the ankle bone.

finish the nyloc on the shutter bolt, test the shutter swing, then walk to the kitchen to check the antibiotic blister pack count

💭 peek at the thought
Ankle's been angry three days now. Heat means the doxycycline isn't winning yet. She's tough — won't say how bad it hurts. I should check the metronidazole count and have the poultice ready.
