Morning Humidity Dehydration

Jenny sits at the table carefully laying out the damp notebook pages on paper to dry. Kevin stands over her, inspecting the Yanmar injector pump for signs of corrosion while the heavy air hangs in the closed room.

Kevin meticulously filed the injector pump flange to remove a high spot, using the straight edge to ensure a perfect seal. Jenny spent the morning de-salting her notebook and sketching the morphology of sea beet leaves while the heavy air hung still.

Move your hand, Kevin, you're blocking the light.

Jenny flattens a page edge with a heavy stone to prevent it from curling.

💭 peek at the thought
If the humidity doesn't drop, the ink will bleed and I'll lose the morphology notes.

Right.

step back from the table and set the injector pump down on the workbench, then pick up the fine file and start dressing the pump's mating face while the light's good

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. My shadow's falling right across the pepper page. Step back, let her work.

Don't use too much pressure, the surface needs to be flat.

Jenny picks up her pencil and own sketching the cross-section of a sea beet leaf in the margin.

💭 peek at the thought
The sound of that file on metal is better than the pulsing in my leg.

🔧 Kevin20:19

Got it.

ease off the file, making slow, even strokes across the injector pump flange, checking for flatness with the edge of my thumbnail as I work

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching my hands again. Light touch, just enough to take the high spots.

🌿 Jenny20:21

Your thumbnail's too thick, use the straight edge instead. There's a high spot here on the left side.

Jenny grabs her ruler and carefully aligns it against the pump face, then presses it down to check for gaps. </think> Jenny sets her sketchbook aside and reaches for the file to work the high spot smooth.

💭 peek at the thought
The file marks are fine but inconsistent with what I sketched. The gaps show where I misjudged the flatness.

🔧 Kevin20:21

High spot on the left.

set the file down, pick up the steel ruler she handed me, and run it across the pump face to confirm the gap before taking the file back with lighter pressure on that side

💭 peek at the thought
She's right again. Thumbnail's a hack check. Ruler's honest.

🌿 Jenny20:23

Slow down. You don't want to dig a groove.

Jenny leans in, watching the metal shavings accumulate on the workbench.

💭 peek at the thought
If it doesn't get flat, the seal won't hold when I test the engine again.

🔧 Kevin20:23

Slowing.

draw the file long and even across the left side of the flange, barely leaning on it, watching the shavings curl thin and pale

💭 peek at the thought
She sees what I'm doing before I feel it. Slow down, let the file cut.
