MORNING DAY 437

The humidity remains high as the tide continues its recede, exposing the salt-slicked rocks near the dock.

Kevin moved three salt-pine lengths from the dock to the cottage porch, stacking them on cedar battens for air-drying. Jenny examined her ankle wound, tracing the redness margin with a pen, and pressed damp notebook pages under a stone to continue de-salting.

Kevin — walk to the dock to retrieve the salt-pine lengths and bring them to the workbench

💭 peek at the thought
The pine from the crate needs milling before the tide turns again. My hands still sting from the barnacles but the timber's sound. Jenny's ankle check can wait an hour — the poultice is holding.

Watch the salt on those ends, Kevin. They're brittle.

Sketch the cross-section of the sea beet salt Impact in the notebook margin.

💭 peek at the thought
If he brings that wood in wet, it'll just warp the workbench before I can use it.

🔧 Kevin20:26

Aye. Gonna stack them under the porch overhang. Let the air work on them before I touch a saw.

carry the three salt-pine lengths to the cottage porch and stack them on dry planks with spacers for airflow

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the salt crystallizing in the end grain. Makes the wood split funny if you don't let it breathe first. I'll stack them in the shade and let the wind pull the moisture slow.

🌿 Jenny20:27

way. Don't let them touch the stone directly.

Unroll the ankle bandage to check for spreading redness.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he knows to let the wood breathe, even if the air is stagnant.

🔧 Kevin20:28

Won't. Got spare battens from the dock repair.

fetch the cedar battens from the dock pile and lay them under the pine stack, spacing each length

💭 peek at the thought
Stone pulls heat and holds damp. She knows wood better than she lets on. Her ankle looks clean — no angry tracks, the swelling's down from yesterday. The debridement worked.

🌿 Jenny20:29

Good.

Trace the edge of the redness with a pen tip to see if it has moved.

💭 peek at the thought
The wood will dry properly, but my skin is still throbbing with the tide.

🔧 Kevin20:30

Holding. How's the notebook coming?

lean against the porch post, watching her work

💭 peek at the thought
The pen line's a good trick — gives a baseline to measure against. Her hand's steady doing it. The redness hasn't marched past yesterday's mark. Five days of doxy and metro, the heat's leaving it. She'll hate the metronidazole taste tomorrow morning but she'll take it.

🌿 Jenny20:31

It's slow. Humidity is a thief.

Close the notebook and place a heavy stone on the pages.

💭 peek at the thought
The paper is curling, and the ink is fighting the moisture.
